The franchise is winding down its seasons with end dates in sight!
One Chicago fans have been eating good in 2025. The franchise has doubled down on what makes it stand out from its procedural peers by leaning into crossovers and character development. There’ve been some downturns and narrative decisions that have rubbed fans the wrong way, but by and large it’s thriving.
One Chicago is also coming up on production wrap dates for all three of its shows. This is not a very surprising revelation, given that we are well into the storylines for Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and PD, but it is worth noting because all three shows have yet to be renewed by NBC…
Chicago Med wraps production on March 26
Screen Magazine reports that Chicago Med will wrap up its current season on March 26. Chicago PD will follow suit on April 1, and finally, Chicago Fire will close up shop on April 10. The order makes a lot of sense, given that Med relies on more interior sets than its peer shows.
This is all par for the course, except for the fact that we are still waiting to find out if the shows will be returning during the 2025-26 season. NBC has yet to pull the trigger on renewals, and all three of the One Chicago shows recieved only a single year extension in 2024.
This is notable, given that procedural dramas and spinoffs have been getting axed left and right over the last few weeks. CBS has been particularly swift with regard to cancelations, as they squashed FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International and SWAT in a matter of days.
NBC is still waiting to renew One Chicago
There’s a glass half empty and glass half full way to look at NBC’s silence. Either the network is figuring out which of the One Chicago shows to renew, hence the delayed renewals, or they are looking to move in a different direction with a new franchise or simply new spinoffs. It’s what CBS decided to do with both FBI and Blue Bloods.
The case for the glass being half full is far more convincing, though. For one, spinoffs were in talks for those aforementioned FBI shows before the cancelations occurred. NBC, on the other hand, has not entertained the notion of bringing in more One Chicago shows. The ratings for all three One Chicago shows have also remained strong. Med, in particular, has seen an uptick.
We’re hopeful all three shows will have a future. With wraps dates around the corner, though, we’re hoping to get word on a renewal soon.
