One Chicago is officially back with some Showrunner changes
After months of a Writers Guild of America strike and studios steadfastly refusing to offer a fair deal, the two sides finally reached an agreement that benefits film and television writers. This means that the writers room has been able to get back to work with the goal of writing some new TV episodes for next season and hopefully getting them into production in time. That also means there will be some changes coming – if the Wolf Entertainment/Universal Television writers’ room is any indication.
Variety reports on the eight shows Dick Wolf has continued to create and has big news about the “One Chicago” series. “Chicago Fire” Season 12 will have a new showrunner, Andrea Newman. She’s been part of the “Chicago Fire” family since its first season as co-executive producer before being named executive producer. She was also a co-showrunner with Derek Haas, but in November 2022 it was announced that he would step down from the series. For Season 12, Newman will have her own hosting duties, but by all accounts, she’s more than up to the task.
Other “One Chicago” productions will keep things consistent, as “Chicago Med” will feature Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov as hosts, while “Chicago P.D.” will be supervised by Gwen Sigan.
FBI: International also has a new host
Another big news coming from Dick Wolf’s media empire involves “FBI: International.” That show is getting a Season 3, and it will also be led by a new showrunner, with executive producer Matt Olmstead taking the helm. The previous host of “FBI: International” was also Derek Haas, but when he left “Chicago Fire,” he left all of Wolf’s shows, leaving the door open for more stepped up.
One Wolf Entertainment show that’s been delaying its return to the writers’ room is “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” which already has a Season 4. It’s only had three seasons so far, but it went through six hosts during that time, including Sean Jablonski, David Graziano, Barry O’Brien, Bryan Goluboff and Ilene Chaiken. Without a showrunner, things can’t happen, and there’s currently no date on when that series will resume writing.
Aside from “Law & Order: Organized Crime” being on hold, this is good news for fans of Wolf’s shows. The remaining three “One Chicago” shows, three “FBI” shows and two “Law & Order” series will return. There’s no doubt that viewers are eager to see what’s next for these shows, especially when it comes to “Chicago Fire,” which ended Season 11 with a big twist when Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) proposes to Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer). Of course, there’s still the matter of studios having to come to a fair deal with SAG-AFTRA before any written content can be filmed with actors, but Andrea Newman has plenty to keep her busy in this time.
