One Chicago Creator Spills: Is Dick Wolf Plotting Even More Spinoffs? [Exclusive Insight]

If Dick Wolf has his way, the One Chicago universe might be getting even bigger.

While walking the red carpet at the Countdown premiere for Prime Video, Derek Haas — co-creator of Chicago Fire and longtime collaborator with Wolf — spoke with Collider’s Aidan Kelley about the possibility of One Chicago expanding beyond its current trio of shows. His response? Who else but Dick Wolf?

“Well, if Dick Wolf were here, he’d say yes, I want to expand. So I will just nod to him. He’s one of the great producers of all time. He is relentless, and my feeling is he will have four more ideas and shows before you know it, because that’s the way he operates.”

That’s about as close to a “stay tuned” as it gets in the One Chicago world — and given how dominant the franchise remains, it wouldn’t be surprising if Haas is right. Haas knows Wolf well — he helped launch the franchise back in 2012 with Chicago Fire and has written for all three shows. He’s now pivoting to streaming with Countdown, a gritty action-thriller that he described as “Avengers meets Die Hard meets 24,” centered on an elite multi-agency task force assembled to stop high-stakes threats.

Currently comprised of Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med, the franchise has become a ratings juggernaut and a staple of NBC’s primetime lineup. All three shows were recently renewed for additional seasons, though they’ll return with a few behind-the-scenes tweaks — including budget cuts.

Who’s Leaving One Chicago?

The cuts have led to changes both in front of and behind the camera. Chicago Fire reportedly lost series regulars Daniel Kyri and Jake Lockett heading into Season 14. While showrunner Andrea Newman attempted to cool the speculation, saying, “We haven’t sat down for Season 14 yet. We don’t know what we’re going to do,” the writing seems to be on the wall for a leaner season ahead.

Meanwhile, Chicago P.D. enters its 13th season after a finale that had fans divided. Some applauded the classic “Voight-style” takedown of yet another antagonist, while others were left underwhelmed by what was meant to be a major payoff. But don’t expect the Intelligence unit to let up. As showrunner Gwen Sigan teased, “I think a lot of them are going to be looking at the job differently.” Even amid change, streaming numbers are rising. Both P.D. and Fire have seen recent spikes on Peacock, proving there’s still a massive appetite for gritty cop cases and firefighter drama in the Windy City.
