New Western Movie Gives One Yellowstone Star The Perfect Replacement After Season 5
Yellowstone season 5 part 2 will leave many of its actors without their biggest franchise ever, but one star already has a replacement lined up.
Luke Grimes, who portrayed Kacey Dutton on Yellowstone, already has his next Western project lined up, and his upcoming movie could be the perfect replacement after the show’s ending. Yellowstone season 5 part 2 will be the last installment in the series, and it will likely see the ending of several parts of the Dutton family tree. As the main show in the franchise comes to a close, many of its actors will need to find a new franchise to serve as a replacement.
Grimes isn’t the only cast member of Yellowstone who is seeking out projects to replicate the show’s success. Kevin Costner is set to soon release his Horizon: An American Saga series of Western movies after his controversial departure from the show. Grimes’ next project is arguably more exciting than Horizon, though, and his upcoming Western movie could be the best replacement for Yellowstone out of all the cast members.
Eddington Gives Luke Grimes A New Western After Yellowstone Ends
Yellowstone season 5 part 2 is expected to premiere in November, though it doesn’t have an official date yet, so there’s no guarantee that’s when the show will end. Still, Grimes is set to appear in the upcoming movie Eddington by director Ari Aster, which will give him another Western project to work on after Yellowstone‘s ending. Filming for Eddington began in March, so its likely audiences will only have to wait to see Grimes in another Western for just a few years.
Yellowstone season 5 part 2 has experienced over a year in delays already, as it was originally scheduled to release in summer 2023.
Eddington Will Be A Very Different Kind Of Western For Luke Grimes Compared To Yellowstone
Yellowstone focuses on hallmarks of the Western genre like cowboys and shootouts, but Eddington could focus on deeply personal and emotional themes.
At face value, Eddington seems similar to Yellowstone, as they are both modern Westerns, but the similarities will likely end there. Eddington‘s director, Ari Aster, is one of the most famous horror directors currently working, and he has a very unique directorial style he’s showcased in some of his most prominent movies, including Hereditary and Midsommar. While there are still very few plot details available about Eddington, it’s more than likely Aster’s new Western will have horror elements as well. Eddington is also rumored to be set during the COVID-19 pandemic, which would make it wildly different from anything Grimes has done before.

Yellowstone, meanwhile, seems tame in comparison to Aster’s previous work and the direction he’ll likely take with Eddington. Yellowstone is different from traditional Westerns due to its contemporary setting, and it’s an excellent example of a modern Western, but it hasn’t broken much new ground for the genre. Yellowstone focuses on hallmarks of the Western genre like cowboys and shootouts, but Eddington could focus on deeply personal and emotional themes. Eddington could bring radical changes to the genre, which would set it even further apart from Yellowstone, which has been relatively conservative in its story and themes.
Grimes’ next project will also be different from Yellowstone due to Eddington‘s star-studded cast, which includes big names like Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix, Austin Butler, and more. Many of the actors on Yellowstone, besides Kevin Costner, have become popular, but that was largely due to their involvement on the show. Eddington will pair Grimes with the biggest cast of stars he’s ever worked with. The cast is a great sign for Eddington‘s success, but it could also give Grimes’ career a boost after losing Yellowstone.
What Luke Grimes Has Said About Yellowstone Ending
While Eddington is a big opportunity for Grimes, his time with Yellowstone will surely be missed. Despite the emotions of leaving the show behind, Grimes recently reflected on Yellowstone and said he was ready to see how it all ends.
This cast and crew, they’re like a second family, we spend a lot of time together. It’s been one of the most intense experiences of my life. Also, one of the most rewarding. It’s changed my life in every way possible. Nothing will ever be the same because of this show in all sorts of ways, good and bad. I will miss it terribly. I know that. I mean, I think I’m ready to know how it ends. I’m ready to tell the end of the story.
Yellowstone has taken up a big portion of both Grimes’ career and his life, and it has clearly become important to him. Kayce’s story is incredibly close to him, but he has also shown that he’s ready to move on with his career. Grimes won’t lose any steam thanks to Eddington, but his longtime involvement in Yellowstone still deserves a fitting ending.
How Will Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton’s Story End In Yellowstone Season 5?
Kayce’s story in Yellowstone has only gotten more complicated as time went on, and its conclusion in season 5 part 2 will likely continue that trend. At the start of the show, Kayce hated John and wanted nothing to do with him, but by season 5 part 1, it was revealed he and Monica named their unborn child after John. The end of Yellowstone season 4 also gave Kayce visions that indicated he would have to make a choice about his future and whether he should focus solely on his family or if he was ready to care for the ranch as well.
Jamie’s feud with Beth and John will likely end in bloodshed, though, so the ranch could go to whichever sibling is left standing, which might be Kayce.
His visions and recently repaired relationship with John could be setting him up as the Dutton sibling who will take over the ranch, but he could easily walk away from the ranch and focus on Monica and Tate. Jamie’s feud with Beth and John will likely end in bloodshed, though, so the ranch could go to whichever sibling is left standing, which might be Kayce. Having him inherit the land could be the best option, as Kayce’s membership in the Broken Rock Indian Reservation would help repair the Duttons’ relationship with them, and Tate could be set as the next in line to inherit the land.
While Yellowstone is ending, Grimes’ time playing Kacey could continue. A new addition to Yellowstone‘s extensive catalog of spinoffs could continue the story of the Dutton family dynasty in the present day. Almost nothing is confirmed about the potential show, tentatively referred to as 2024, but there are several rumors about who could be involved in the project, from Matthew McConaughey to Michelle Pfeiffer. How Kayce’s story ends and whether it can continue beyond Yellowstone remains to be seen, but even if 2024 doesn’t happen, Luke Grimes will still have Eddington to hang his cowboy hat on.
