CBS’s newest crime procedural returns with a new episode of Season 2, Episode 4. A comforting drama, Tracker follows Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley), a survivor who works as a freelance investigator. The series is a rare look at a character who lives in the gray areas of life. Unlike the teams on NCIS or SWAT, Colter is not affiliated with any official agency. He is an enemy of the authorities in many ways, receiving bounties for his efforts. Adapted from the series of the same name by Jeffery Deaver, Tracker is a fresh take on an old genre. In the latest episode, titled “Noble Rot,” Colter finds himself out of his element in the following plot summary: “Reenie asks Colter to take on a case involving a woman who goes missing at a high-end wellness resort in Napa for executives.”
Reenie, played by Fiona Rene, is Colter’s calm, professional counterpart. As a lawyer who helps him solve cases, Reenie sometimes disagrees with Colter. The images from the episode show Colter changing from a social perspective. He and Renee explore the lush green forest in pastels as they are thrust together in the wine country. Their relationship is a fan favorite and is likely to become even more complicated with the addition of a guest star in this episode. Michael Rady appears in a supporting role as Elliot, who accompanies Reenie to the event. This surprise guest could add pressure to Tracker’s biggest missed opportunity.
From the start of the series, there is palpable tension between Colter and Reenie. True to the formula of a crime procedural, nothing happens. However. The history of the genre suggests that the push and pull between co-workers in any procedural takes multiple seasons to come to fruition. In the case of Colter and Reenie, there have been a few near misses. The first episode showed a tense past, and Season 2 introduced a potential love triangle.
The other corner of the triangle is none other than Colter’s brother, Russell, played by actor Jensen Ackles. After Colter learns that Russell and Reenie are dating, he predictably becomes jealous. Ackles only appeared in one episode this season, and now Reenie appears to be on another date. All of her romantic interests could finally fulfill the promise of Season 1 and bring this implied relationship to a head. After all, there’s no point in a procedural without some romantic drama to keep fans interested. If Tracker has any meaning, however, it will let the members of this romance simmer for a few more seasons before officially bringing the characters together. Viewers can watch Tracker Season 2, Episode 4 when it airs on CBS on Sunday, November 3, at 9 p.m. ET.
