Netflix’s Virgin River Prequel Plans Hit a Nerve — Fans Demand a Different Spin-Off

Virgin River fans have shared their views on the prospect of the new prequel series after a major update was given on the progress of the show – and they aren’t happy about it

Virgin River fans have been left fuming after an update was announced regarding the planned prequel to the hit Netflix show.

The series is reportedly in development and is set to tell the story of main character Mel Monroe’s parents Everett and Sarah. Fans have already seen the characters teased on the original series in season six, and fans are now eagerly awaiting a spin-off.

The success of recent prequel shows, such as Yellowstone’s 1883 and 1923, has spurred on the idea of other hit series telling their own backstory. However, after the latest update, fans don’t seem so enthusiastic about learning more on Mel’s parents – and have admitted they would prefer a different format for the show.

Fans took to social media to share their take on what should happen next after one Netflix-themed site suggested the spin-off still hasn’t been greenlit. One viewer shared on Reddit: “According to What’s-on-Netflix, the proposed prequel about Mel’s parents has not yet been greenlit and the momentum seems to be slowing.

“It has been announced that Callum Kerr will be back for season 7 for more flashbacks as Everett Reid. It’s still unknown if Jessica Rothe will appear as Sarah, Mel’s mother.” Keen to discuss the subject further, other social media users then waded into the debate with their own views.

One shared: “That storyline surely didn’t get the reaction they expected from the viewers. Since the actor is returning, I’m guessing they’re gonna continue to try to sell the idea to us for another season, which means more Everett drama, everything I didn’t ask for.”

A second said: “I’m not interested in Everett, and I’m even less interested in that prequel. The less time devoted to Mel’s parents, the better.” A third admitted: “I liked when in the flashbacks of Sarah and Everett, they included younger Connie and Bert. I would rather see flashbacks of other characters within the regular VR.

“Perhaps Doc coming to VR and meeting Hope as he remembers starting the clinic while fighting to keep his license. Muriel reflecting on her acting career while undergoing her cancer treatment. Preacher and Jack meeting and becoming best friends while in the Marines.”

A fourth agreed: “This is a big reason I wish the prequel would get picked up. I’d love to see more about the back stories of some of the VR long term residents. I didn’t mind the flashbacks, but I’d love a season where we could just focus on the present and not have a bunch of flashbacks. But I’d absolutely support a whole show that gave us more on the regulars in VR.”

A fifth griped: “I hate that they’re trying to advertise another show to us through a storyline. What a weird thing to do. Gives me a gigantic ick.” Virgin River has just been renewed for Season 7 much to the delight of fans who have been watching since its debut in 2019.

Virgin River’s plot has focused on main characters Mel and Jack — played by Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson — as they navigate their romance and the usual trials and tribulations of a relationship.

The pair are joined in the remote town of Virgin River by their friends, family and colleagues as the characters deal with everything from gang wars, domestic abuse, murder and more.
