Netflix Virgin River’s Tim Matheson breaks silence on season seven after historic renewal

Netflix has already renewed Virgin River for a seventh season before the sixth outing has even hit the streaming service, and one star has now shared an update on the next chapter

Tim Matheson, star of Virgin River, has confirmed an exciting update on the status of season seven, more than a month before the sixth series is due to land on Netflix.

The popular small-town drama, which follows the romantic journey of Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), has been captivating audiences for the past five years and has garnered a fanbase in the millions.

Earlier this year, Netflix announced the renewal of Virgin River for a seventh season, making it their longest ongoing drama and the longest-running English-language series in their catalogue.

We’re now just over a month away from welcoming back Mel and Jack to our screens on Thursday, December 19, a year after the show’s impressive Christmas double bill in 2023.

After a well-deserved Christmas break, Matheson has disclosed that production on season seven will officially kick off in March 2025, reports the Express.

The much-loved TV actor, who has played Vernon ‘Doc’ Mullins in every season of Virgin River to date, went on to express how the cast has evolved into a “family” over the past few years.

“I love the feeling of the show, and also the cast and crew have all become like family,” he shared.

“So it’s really wonderful that we all now think of each other as family. It is one of my favourite experiences, and I love the show.”

In a recent chat with Anna Daly, the actor opened up about his new memoir, Damn Glad to Meet You: My Seven Decades in the Hollywood Trenches, and shared insights into why Doc has been among his most cherished roles throughout his extensive career on television.

“I love playing Doc Mullins because I’ve played a lot of doctors, and I did a lot of research about country doctors who work in small towns, where you know all of your patients,” Matheson revealed.

“It’s a different kind of connection with the people you serve.

“When you walk down the street, you see them; you see them at the bar at night. It’s a different kind of medicine, really.

“This is the story of a guy who left the big city to get back to treating patients one-on-one, and I love that.”

As Netflix gears up for the release of Virgin River’s sixth season, fans are bracing themselves for another emotional whirlwind, with the storyline leading up to Mel and Jack’s highly anticipated wedding.

Elsewhere in the show, Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale) seems to be visibly pregnant, Dan Brady (Ben Hollingsworth) continues to navigate through murky waters, and the relationship between Preacher (Colin Lawrence) and Kaia (Kandyse McClure) remains solid.
