Netflix is working on a sequel series to the iconic 1980s sitcom “A Different World.”
The project will focus on the daughter of Dwayne and Whitley Gilbert, now a freshman at the fictional Hillman College, a historically Black college.
Writer Felicia Pride is attached as a writer and executive producer for the project. Original creative team members like Debbie Allen, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Tom Werner, and Mandy Summers are reportedly involved as executive producers.
Discussions with the original cast, including Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison for potential cameos or recurring roles are ongoing.
The upcoming series will be a single-camera, half-hour comedy, tapping into the nostalgia and cultural significance of the original series that aired from 1987 to 1993. It may have similarities with other revivals like That ’90s Show and Bel-Air.
The series will premiere on Netflix, but the streaming platform has not officially confirmed the status of the project.
Previous attempts to revive the show faced obstacles due to legal issues surrounding Bill Cosby, as “A Different World” was a spinoff of “The Cosby Show.” Casting for the series has not yet started.
The original cast of “A Different World” is celebrating the 35th anniversary with an HBCU tour.
