If there is one thing guaranteed to bring viewers out in numbers, it is the return of some fan-favorite characters after more than a decade. For that reason, it is not surprising that NCIS: Tony & Ziva has been a big hit with those NCIS fans that have waited a long time to see Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo return to their respective roles. But will this be a one-and-done return, or is there more to come for the pair on their European adventure?
Speaking to TV Insider, De Pablo addressed the likelihood of Tony & Ziva getting a second season. Although she doesn’t yet know whether Season 2 will be green lit or not, the actress would be thrilled to continue the story of her most famous character. She said:
“I think we’d be lucky to play these characters for — look, I’ll say this: Season 1 was like a dream. It was so much fun to go back and revisit these characters. Where this goes, we know not. All we know is that we had to do this. Michael and I felt we owed it to the fans. And so we’re really happy about this just being able to happen. We manifested it. It came together beautifully. We had [showrunner] John McNamara leading this. He came up with a world that is beautiful. I mean, visually. You saw how beautiful the backdrop of Europe is and how it almost is like a character in itself, like how that backdrop is its own sort of romantic character that allows the story to so beautifully be played out. We’re just grateful that we got a chance to do it, and the rest is the rest. If we got a chance to do it again, we’d be thrilled.”
‘NCIS: Tony & Ziva’ Has a Strong Shot at Season 2
If there is one thing that can be said about the NCIS franchise, it is very rare that a spinoff series runs for just one season. This alone makes it incredibly likely that we will see Weatherly and De Pablo back on screens again beyond the finale of Season 1. Of course, when news of a renewal comes is something that no one knows, but these first episodes don’t conclude until October 23, so it is possible that fans will have to wait until at least then to find out the series’ fate.
Naturally, being part of the NCIS family, Tony & Ziva does not only have its own story to tell but has the potential to crossover with characters from the flagship series. Guest appearances from some other fan-favorite characters would also help to integrate this story with the wider franchise timeline and flesh out the world a little more at the same time.
