NCIS Season 22’s Most Disappointing Storyline Can Still Be Saved With 1 Thing In Season 23

NCIS season 22 started strong with the surprising mole plot involving Sean Murray’s Tim McGee and the newly appointed deputy director, Gabriel LaRoche. However, the storyline ended with a disappointing conclusion that didn’t fully appreciate either character. NCIS season 22’s focus on McGee could have gone better, and fortunately, NCIS season 23 could offer the perfect solution.

The NCIS cast has remained the same in recent years, ever since that last major character swap in season 19 when Gibbs left and Parker took over. The calmness in the MCRT could mean that NCIS season 23 is gearing up for a major change, but not in the expected way. Whatever happens, signs point towards good news for McGee.

NCIS Season 23 Can Finally Give McGee A Promotion
McGee Could Finally Get What He’s Been Waiting For

Ever since he became a fully fledged NCIS agent and lost his “probie” status, McGee has kept the same role among his team. He has risen in seniority in comparison to some of his newer colleagues, like Torres and Knight, but he has remained in the same position. It is this sameness that points towards change for McGee.

NCIS season 23 could finally give McGee a well-deserved promotion. He was originally among the top contenders for the deputy director position in NCIS season 22, but lost out because the executives wanted the position to go to someone outside NCIS. McGee was more than qualified for the position, he was just not the right fit.

Since McGee lost the original promotion, he could finally receive a promotion that works best for him and the team in NCIS season 23. The NCIS organization is massive, and there are several local and national positions that would be perfect for a senior agent like McGee. The promotion would also give him a chance to shine again.

Why NCIS Can’t Further Stagnate McGee In Season 23
McGee Deserves Better In NCIS

In recent years, it seems like NCIS does not know what to do with McGee. His storyline about trying to catch LaRoche in the act was exciting, but became disappointing when it was revealed that LaRoche was undercover all along. As an experienced agent, McGee should have caught that. Missing that information does not align with his character.

If McGee continues to be stagnant in NCIS, it would be an insult to the character. NCIS’ McGee problem is especially frustrating considering how important McGee has been to the show. The fact that he’s one of the few remaining season 1 characters still on the show decades later underscores just how crucial he’s been throughout the seasons.

Every long-running show will occasionally have an off-season for a character, so NCIS season 22 dropping the ball with McGee is frustrating but forgivable. But if NCIS were to keep him in a holding pattern for a second season in a row, then it’s time to write him out of the show, sad as it is.

That’s why a promotion storyline in NCIS season 23 would kill two birds with one stone, putting McGee in brand-new situations that force his character to evolve, and potentially giving the faltering show a shot in the arm. If any character were to deserve it, it’s McGee – just as it would be fitting if it were McGee who brought wayward audiences back to the series for good.
