NCIS’ Returns to Tuesdays for Season 23 – And It’s All About the Characters

NCIS is officially heading back to where it all began — Tuesday nights — and fans couldn’t be more excited.

After four seasons airing on Mondays, the long-running CBS procedural is making a nostalgic move for its upcoming Season 23, returning to its classic Tuesday night time slot. The shift brings the show full circle, aligning it with its original broadcast tradition that dates back to its 2003 debut.

A Homecoming for the Franchise

In a joint Instagram announcement this week, CBS Studios and the NCISverse (which includes NCIS, NCIS: Origins, and NCIS: Sydney) revealed that all three series will premiere on Tuesday, October 14.

The post simply read: “Tuesdays, we’re coming home,” and was quickly flooded with excitement from fans and cast alike. NCIS: Sydney star Sean Sagar chimed in with: “Take over Tuesdays!! Can’t wait for you all to see what we have been solving down under.”

One fan summed it up perfectly: “Welcome home, NCIS!”

What to Expect in Season 23

The new season promises more than just a return to a familiar time slot — it marks a creative shift in focus. According to longtime showrunner Steven D. Binder, the next chapter of NCIS will be more character-driven than ever before.

“We really want to get to everybody in a big way,” Binder told TVLine. “I know people always say, ‘I watch the show for the characters’ — that was always our thing — and I really want to make this a character-forward show in a way we haven’t seen before.”

Binder’s comments hint at deeper storylines and emotional arcs for fan-favorite characters like Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama), Alden Parker (Gary Cole), and Timothy McGee (Sean Murray). It’s a move that mirrors the narrative approach of the recent prequel NCIS: Origins, which centers on a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs and explores the personal history that shaped the beloved team leader.

More Than Just Crime Solving

While NCIS has always balanced gripping cases with personal subplots, Season 23 looks to tip the scales further, offering fans a more intimate look at the lives behind the badges. It’s a fitting evolution for a series that continues to reinvent itself while honoring its roots.

So mark your calendars: October 14 will be more than just another premiere — it’s a reunion with the team we’ve grown to love, right back where we first found them.

Tuesdays belong to NCIS once again.
