‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Creator Teases Long-Awaited Return of Original Star Linda Hunt

Exciting news for longtime NCIS: Los Angeles fans—series creator R. Scott Gemmill has revealed that plans are in motion for the beloved original cast member Linda Hunt to return as Henrietta “Hetty” Lange in upcoming episodes.

Although Hetty has only made brief, sporadic appearances in recent seasons—such as checking in on Eric and Nell or updating the team about operations in Syria—fans have been eager for a proper comeback. According to Gemmill, that return may finally happen, and the emotional anchor could be Callen and Anna’s wedding.

In a recent interview with TVLine, Gemmill hinted that Hetty’s presence is essential to Callen’s big day. “Callen realizes he has unfinished business with Hetty,” he explained. “He wouldn’t want to get married without her there. The idea is to rescue her and figure out what she’s gotten herself into.”

Gemmill confirmed that scheduling and logistics—especially pandemic-related restrictions and Hunt’s age (she’s now 77)—have delayed her full return. “We had the same goal last year, but a COVID surge changed everything,” he said. “Now that things are calming down, we’re hopeful we can finally make it happen.”

Season 14 Could Lay the Groundwork

NCIS: Los Angeles is gearing up for its 14th season, set to premiere in early October. While nothing has been confirmed, Gemmill’s comments suggest the early episodes may begin laying the groundwork for Hetty’s return. Whether she reappears for the wedding, a rescue mission, or both remains to be seen—but anticipation is high.

What Else Is Coming in the NCIS Universe?

As NCIS: LA prepares for another action-packed season, the broader NCIS franchise also has major events lined up. The flagship NCIS series returns next month for its 20th season, and it’ll kick off with a crossover episode with NCIS: Hawai’i, which enters its second season.

So, whether you’re a die-hard Hetty fan or just excited for more crossovers, there’s plenty to look forward to in the NCIS universe this fall.
