NCIS is now one of CBS’ most successful television franchises, but its rise to the top didn’t happen overnight — and it wasn’t accomplished by CBS alone.
According to executive producer Mark Horowitz, the turning point came when both JAG and NCIS were picked up by USA Network for round-the-clock reruns following their third seasons. The constant exposure introduced the procedural to an entirely new audience, significantly boosting live ratings on CBS.
NCIS co-creator Donald P. Bellisario later admitted he didn’t immediately realize how big the show had become, while star Mark Harmon reflected on the long hours and growing pains of the show’s early years, noting that its success was built gradually.
Now in its 23rd season, NCIS continues to expand with multiple spin-offs, cementing its place as one of television’s most enduring franchises.
