Whether or not Gibbs and Lala were meant to be a romance in NCIS: Origins, NCIS canon has already removed that possibility. The NCIS spinoff is just playing along. Although Gibbs has been relatively shy after the loss of his family in NCIS: Origins, Gibbs in NCIS is no stranger to romances. His numerous connections prove that.
While Gibbs’ several romances in the years between NCIS: Origins and the NCIS pilot are exciting, they also paint a tragic picture for Lala. While the NCIS prequel has some flexibility with the timing of events, there are certain moments the show can’t ignore. And one of Gibbs’ most important interactions already happened in the NCIS: Origins season 1 finale.
Lala Surviving NCIS: Origins Season 2 Didn’t Matter When Gibbs Met Diane
TheNCIS: Origins season 1 finale revealed that Gibbs met his ex-wife, Diane. Diane would become Gibbs’ second wife after the loss of Shannon. She would also go on to become an important NCIS character, appearing in several episodes and even marrying Tobias Fornell after their divorce. Diane’s appearance is great for NCIS, but bad for Lala.
All throughout NCIS: Origins season 1, Lala and Gibbs shared a few romantic moments, which even culminated in a potential kiss in the finale. However, all that became moot when Gibbs met Diane. From NCIS, we know that Diane became an important person in Gibbs’ life, but Lala is never mentioned.
Tragically, the early meeting between Gibbs and Diane hints that Gibbs and Lala’s romance won’t become official. As a result, her survival in season 2 after the terrible car crash in the season 1 finale does not matter in terms of her love life with Gibbs. From the moment Gibbs and Diane met, all other potential romances were paused.
Diane Is One Of Gibbs’ Confirmed Romances, Not Lala

Diane’s appearance is crucial to following canon, but the same can’t be said about Lala. While Lala was an important person in Gibbs’ life in 1992, the fact that she is never mentioned in NCISreveals that this importance will be lost over the years. It also likely means that Gibbs and Lala will never even have a complete romance.
While Gibbs and Lala may have some tension in NCIS: Origins, the NCIS spinoff can’t ignore the fact that Lala is not one of Gibbs’ confirmed romances. As unfortunate as it is, this means that Lala’s survival won’t impact Gibbs’ love life. He has met Diane and will likely pursue things with her soon. Lala dying or surviving changes nothing.
