From cop procedurals to superhero comic books—Nathan Fillion is proving he can do it all.
After taking on the role of Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie—set to hit theaters on July 11—his character is making the leap to HBO’s Lanterns, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Fillion will reprise his role as the Green Lantern, joining Kyle Chandler, who will star as another Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, along with Aaron Pierre as a new recruit. The cast also includes Jason Ritter, Kelly Macdonald, Poorna Jagannathan and Ulrich Thomsen
The show’s logline teases that “new recruit John Stewart (Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
Fillion, 54, previously expressed excitement over portraying a “jerk,” telling TVGuide.com it’s “very freeing as an actor.”
“I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence,” he explained of his movie character.
Fillion, who was beloved by fans for portraying John Nolan on The Rookie, explained how he got the role during a visit to The Jennifer Hudson Show, crediting Gunn’s loyalty after he worked on his very first film and even took a little dig at the Green Lantern’s statement-making “strawberry blonde” bowl hair cut.
“I think I’m going to bring that look back,” he said, but he wasn’t joking—production on the DC Studios series began back in late February, around the same time The Rookie finished airing its 7th season.
