Why Everybody Loves Raymond Recast Ray’s Twins After the Pilot
Everybody Loves Raymond expertly portrays the reality of family life. But, why are Ray’s twins, Michael and Geoffrey so different in the pilot?
What makes “The Reunion Show” such an outstanding and special crossover is that Fran Drescher and Raymond Barone actually went to high school together in real life. In the episode, they mention that this is a Hillcrest High School reunion, which is the same high school Romano and Drescher attended, graduating in 1975.
Ray Romano spent several years working as a stand-up comedian when he got his big break on the Everybody Loves Raymond TV series.
While this detail is pretty accurate in terms of the actors’ lives, however, it doesn’t make that much sense when taking into account Everybody Loves Raymond’s universe. Hillcrest High School is located in Queens, where both Drescher and Romano were born and raised. The Nanny says that Fran Fine came from Flushing, Queens, so it would make sense for her to attend Hillcrest High School.
Fran Drescher started working in the film industry in 1977, first having a brief appearance on Saturday Night Live. She appeared in several films from the late ’70s and ’80s, such as American Hot Wax, Gorp, and Cadillac Man, until she got her own show, The Nanny, in 1993.
However, Raymond Barone supposedly lived his whole life on Long Island, where the family resides in the TV series, making it pretty weird for him to attend a high school in Queens. Still, these details don’t really matter in sitcoms. For all the audience knows, Raymond Barone might have spent a couple of years in Queens. Even if he didn’t, this is still a detail the fandom can ignore because the inside joke is too good to overanalyze it.
