It’s been years since Monica Raymund lit up Chicago Fire as Gabby Dawson, but fans still hold out hope for her return to Firehouse 51. While Raymund isn’t reprising her role on the hit NBC drama just yet, she’s making her way back into the Dick Wolf universe with a guest-starring role in the upcoming Prime Video series, On Call.
Monica Raymund’s Role in On Call
Raymund is set to guest star as a Long Beach, California, police officer in On Call, an innovative police procedural drama created by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf, son of Chicago Fire executive producer Dick Wolf.
The show blends traditional storytelling with modern techniques, incorporating body-cam, dash-cam, and cellphone footage to create an immersive, high-stakes experience. The plot follows seasoned officer Traci Harmon, played by Pretty Little Liars alum Troian Bellisario, as she trains rookie cops, including Alex Diaz (The Good Doctor’s Brandon Larracuente). Other cast members include Lori Loughlin as Lieutenant Bishop.
A Look Back at Gabby Dawson’s Chicago Fire Journey
Raymund played Gabriela “Gabby” Dawson, an original Chicago Fire character, for six seasons. Starting as a paramedic on Ambulance 61, Dawson also spent time as a firefighter on Truck 81 before returning to her paramedic roots.
Her departure came in the Season 6 finale, The Grand Gesture, where Dawson left Chicago to lead a rescue-and-relief team in Puerto Rico. Since then, she has returned for guest appearances, notably in the Season 7 premiere and Season 8’s Best Friend Magic.
Despite her sporadic appearances, Chicago Fire showrunners have downplayed the chances of her permanent return. In 2022, co-creator Derek Haas told Us Weekly that Dawson’s storyline had reached a natural conclusion, especially given her ex-husband Matt Casey’s romantic arc with Sylvie Brett at the time.
What Could a Gabby Dawson Return Look Like?
Now that Matt Casey and Sylvie Brett have both left the series, the possibility of a Gabby Dawson comeback isn’t entirely off the table. However, Firehouse 51 has evolved, and only a few original characters remain, including Christopher Herrmann, Joe Cruz, and Mouch McHolland.
Raymund has expressed gratitude for the open door but remains uncertain about a full-time return. In a 2018 interview with TV Guide, she said, “I don’t know whether or not I’m going to return to the show. That is up for debate, but I am very humbled that the door remains open.”
Monica Raymund Reflects on Her Time in the One Chicago Universe
Despite her busy schedule and uncertain plans, Raymund speaks fondly of her time on Chicago Fire. “I really do miss my cast and my crew,” she shared in a 2018 interview. “It’s a pleasure and an honor working with those people. The storytelling of first responders in America… is a pretty incredible honor to tell.”
Her upcoming role on On Call signals her continued connection to Dick Wolf’s storytelling universe, reigniting speculation about a future cameo—or even a larger role—on Chicago Fire.
What’s Next for Monica Raymund?
While Raymund’s new project doesn’t confirm her return to Firehouse 51, it shows her ongoing collaboration with the creative minds behind the One Chicago franchise. Whether she’ll don the paramedic uniform again remains uncertain, but fans can catch her in On Call when it debuts on Prime Video.
For now, Chi-Hards can revisit Gabby Dawson’s most iconic moments on Chicago Fire and hope for another appearance down the line.
