Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo will reprise their roles as Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David in an NCIS spinoff series this fall, while the main series is returning for its 23rd season. While NCIS airs on CBS and the new series will air on Paramount+, that doesn’t mean there won’t be an opportunity for a crossover, right?
“Because of the different production schedules — we’re on a network schedule and they’re on a streaming schedule, so the dates haven’t been set yet, so it’s really hard to get a Tony and Ziva crossover,” NCIS executive producer Steven D. Binder told TV Insider about the shocking season 22 ending. “Now that it’s done, I’d love to do it. I think it would be great.”
“I can’t speak for the studio or the network in terms of what they think, but they’re generally very supportive of crossovers,” he continued. “Now that we’ve got the footage, we’re definitely going to look at it. It would be fun, it would be good for both parties, and it would be appealing to the audience. There’s no reason not to do it, unless there’s something I don’t know. But like I said, I’m just speaking as a writer, and you’re asking a question that needs to be decided by someone above me. But I can tell you that I talk to Michael regularly. We’ve talked about Tony and Ziva for years, and I can assure you that everything is in place for something like that to happen.”
Both Weatherly and de Pablo have appeared on NCIS since they left their main roles. Weatherly returns in a tribute to Ducky after David McCallum dies, while de Pablo shows up to bring Ziva back and then reunites with Tony and their daughter in Paris.
The new spinoff, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, debuting this fall, will tell the story of the two raising their daughter together. (The trailer reveals their relationship is complicated.) When Tony’s security company comes under attack, they’re forced to flee across Europe, figure out who’s after them, and maybe learn to trust each other again to get their unconventional happy ending.
