Melissa Rauch & Simon Helberg’s Sitcom Comeback Was Cut Short by a Shocking Cancelation

Although The Big Bang Theory’s Melissa Rauch and Simon Helberg were briefly reunited in Night Court’s season 3 finale, the wildest part of their shared story was ruined by a swift cancellation. The Big Bang Theory’s cast of characters was reliably hilarious, so it is no surprise that the series became one of the most-viewed comedies on television during its run. By the time The Big Bang Theory’s finale rolled around, viewers were eager to see where the cast would go next, but also hopeful about the prospect of an eventual reunion.

While The Big Bang Theory’s sequel series may never happen, judging by the comments of its cast, the show’s main stars have reunited a few times. In particular, the reboot of the classic ‘90s sitcom, Night Coury, has been a venue for numerous The Big Bang Theory reunions thanks to Melissa Rauch’s starring role as Judge Abby Stone. Rauch, who played Bernadette in The Big Bang Theory, met characters played by the earlier show’s stars Kunal Nayyar and Mayim Bialik while playing Night Court’s Abby Stone.

Night Court Season 3 Reunited The Big Bang Theory’s Melissa Rauch and Simon Helberg

The Big Bang Theory Star Was Revealed To Be Abby’s Secret Husband In Season 3’s Finale

Night Court’s most impressive The Big Bang Theory cameo came in its season 3 finale, as the show revealed that Simon Helberg played Abby’s secret husband. Simon Helberg’s Night Court role could have led to a truly surreal meta plot line as, in-universe, the reboot revealed that their characters had secretly been married off-screen throughout all its three seasons. Thus, retroactively, Rauch and Helberg were revealed to be playing another sitcom couple who’d been married for years, long after Bernadette and Howard ended The Big Bang Theory as a happily married couple.

After a strong start in seasons 1 and 2, Night Court’s season 3 ratings took a major dive, and the finale’s revelation of Abby’s secret husband was meant to be a big cliffhanger.

This made for a pretty bizarre meta gag thanks to its obvious nod to their The Big Bang Theory roles, and it certainly made for a killer twist ending to season 3. However, Night Court’s surprise cancellation means the plot will now never be resolved. Helberg and Rauch Almost Played Another Mismatched Married Couple

The Big Bang Theory's Weirdest Reunion Story Was Ruined By A Surprise Cancelation

Night Court season 3’s ending was a fascinating way to reunite Rauch and Helberg since, unlike most sitcom romances, the two characters were revealed to already have secretly been together all along in the finale. Night Court season 4 would have needed to explain how Abby had a secret husband no one knew about, and Rauch told The Wrap that the finale appearance wasn’t just intended to be a one-off cameo.

Per the series star, Helberg’s season 4 role would have been substantial. Rauch said, “He would come back in and we can really do an arc for the storyline, and not only reveal what the story is behind what we saw in the finale, but sort of move forward.” This sounded promising, offering viewers the first glimpse of Rauch and Helberg’s shared chemistry since their The Big Bang Theory characters last graced the screen in 2019. However, the inventive, meta reunion wasn’t meant to be.

Abby and her secret husband may have shared Howard and Bernadette’s dynamic or been nothing like the earlier duo, but viewers will now never know.
