Maya & Carina Deserved Better: The Lost Storylines That Make Station 19’s End Even Sadder

Maya and Carina were among the most beloved couples in Station 19 , and what could have been in store for them had Station 19 continued makes its cancelation hurt more. Maya sprinting to get the patient’s nose to Grey Sloan Memorial and being noticed by Carina gave their relationship an unusual start, but this didn’t stop it from having its fair share of ups and downs after their families’ dramatic moments affected Maya and Carina directly. Because of everything they had to overcome alone and together, Maya and Carina’s relationship had one of the best developments in the firefighting drama.

Despite Maya’s unwillingness to show vulnerability at their relationship’s beginning, Carina and Maya’s bond grew strong, with them being there for each other through Maya’s realization of her father’s abusive behavior and Andrew DeLuca’s gut-wrenching death. After Station 19 season 6 pulled them apart following Maya’s crisis and refusal to accept help, Station 19 ending with season 7 made it possible for Carina and Maya to grow their family and get their hard-won happily ever after. However, what was in store for Maya and Carina’s future had Station 19 not been canceled would have been just as interesting to watch.

Danielle Savre and Stefania Spampinato Reveal Stories About Maya & Carina That Station 19 Never Got To Tell

Carina & Maya’s Future Unfurling Would Have Expanded Them As Characters

Maya’s Danielle Savre and Carina’s Stefania Spampinato looked back on Maya and Carina’s impact on Station 19 and its fans as part of Entertainment Weekly’s celebration of Shondaland’s 20 years, revealing what would have been in store for Maya and Carina. While Station 19 season 7 finale’s flashforwards showed the potential future of the Station 19 firefighters, the firefighting drama couldn’t elaborate more. Savre revealed that given Maya eventually carrying a pregnancy, it would have been interesting to tackle the difficulties of growing their family and still working as a firefighter, the reason Maya didn’t want to have children initially.

Spampinato also touched upon the themes that Station 19 couldn’t tackle due to time limitations, as season 7 only had ten episodes, and that would have directly involved Carina talking to young adults about sex and the way ovarian cancer is discussed. With Station 19 season 7 effectively showing Maya and Carina finding the place they’d make their home and finalizing Liam’s adoption, Spampinato added it would have been interesting to see how Maya and Carina would have reacted to potential struggles in their relationship after seven years together, but this couldn’t have been seen in season 7’s ten episodes.
