Max’s Big Bang Theory Spinoff Still in the Works, Chuck Lorre Confirms

The Big Bang Theory franchise continues to expand with Young Sheldon getting a sequel series of its own. Meanwhile, there are still plans to develop a separate spinoff for a streaming release at Max.

In April 2023, it was revealed that a new Big Bang Theory spinoff was in the works. Unlike The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, however, the mysterious spinoff would go straight to streaming. Very little else has been shared about the project since, even after Young Sheldon came to an end. Chuck Lorre, one of the creators of The Big Bang Theory, recently confirmed to Variety that the spinoff is still happening, but admitted that it’s still in its very early stages without much development.

“It’s still in the works, it’s endlessly in the works,” Lorre said. “It’s still prenatal.”

“It’s still prenatal.”

All that’s really known about the Max series is that it’s set in the same world as The Big Bang Theory. It’s not clear if it is set after the events of the original show, or if it will be another prequel series in the vein of Young Sheldon. No characters have been confirmed to be included, and it seems that even the main cast members of the original series are not sure if their characters are planned to be involved. Earlier this year, Raj actor Kunal Nayyar said he felt it was “too soon” for him to reprise his role, but that he was nevertheless open to doing so.

“To be honest, it feels a little too soon,” Nayyar told TVLine. “Can you do a [revival] only four years after your show ends? That’s not a reunion show; that’s just another season… If [the spinoff] were to happen, we’ll see what the universe says.”

He added, “To be honest, I have not heard anything about this other than what the media has spun out. I’m not entirely sure what it’s about.”

Two Big Bang Theory Characters Reunited in the Young Sheldon Finale

There was a mini Big Bang Theory reunion in the series finale of Young Sheldon. Both Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik reprised their roles as Sheldon and Amy for a flash-forward scene. If the next spinoff is set in the modern day, it could similarly bring back actors like Nayyar, Parsons, and Bialik, at least for special appearances. In any case, it doesn’t seem like there’s a major rush to get the Max spinoff made.

For now, fans of the franchise can look forward to the Young Sheldon sequel series. Called Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, the new series will primarily follow Montana Jordan’s Georgie Cooper and Emily Osment’s Mandy. There will also be special guest appearances from some of the other main cast members of Young Sheldon.
