Matlock Revival Adds Intrigue with Return of Overlooked Character

The latest update on Matlock season 2 confirms the return of an unexpected character. The breakout hit legal dramedy ended on a note of uncertainty for Kathy Bates’ titular Madeline Matlock. Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) has figured out her secret. But heading into Matlock season 2, which premieres later this year on CBS, Matty may have bigger problems to contend with.

Matty’s home life is at a bit of a crossroads, whether that relates to her grandson Alfie or her marriage. There are no immediate answers about how either of those questions will be resolved, but the wait for answers just got a bit shorter.

The official Instagram for Matlock on CBS has shared a cast photo to celebrate that season 2 is now in production. The photo features all the core actors, including Jason Ritter, David Del Rio, Leah Lewis, Sam Anderson, Beau Bridges, and Aaron Harris, who plays Alfie, along with Marshall and Bates.

But while the presence of the main and recurring Matlock actors is not surprising, the photo also includes Francisco Chacin. The actor plays Stuart Gray, the assistant to Senior (Bridges), who appears in three episodes of season 1. In the post, included below, he’s seen next to Bridges at a table read:

What This Means For Matlock Season 2
It Gives A Sense Of Where The Show Is Going

It’s safe to assume that Chacin will reprise his role at some point early in season 2, perhaps with Stuart getting a bigger spotlight. It is not usual for minor characters to steadily get more focus as a series progresses. But it may well be a minor note compared to everything else that happened in the Matlock season 1 finale.

Although the culprit behind the WellBrexa case is unmasked, conflicted feelings complicate the situation. And, on an even more immediate level, a man shows up at Matty’s door and says that he’s Alfie’s father. These are some urgent cliffhangers that the show will want to start clearing out once new episodes premiere.

It’s Good To Keep The Show’s World Consistent

It’ll be cool to see Chacin potentially get more of an opportunity to shine. One of the things that a show can do, heading into its second installment, is take a look at which characters and relationships have more room to grow and write stories on that basis.

Matlock season 2 doesn’t have a release date just yet, but it will be fun to see which other familiar faces are brought back as more developments about the upcoming season are revealed.
