There’s going to be one more regular face in The Rookie Season 8. The show, which has yet to air its Season 7 finale, but which has already been renewed for Season 8 at ABC, has officially graduated one of its rookies. Deric Augustine, who plays Miles Penn in the cop procedural, has officially been upped to series regular ahead of the show’s Season 7 finale. That means that whatever his storyline is going forward, we can expect to see a lot more of Augustine, not just in the upcoming Season 7 episodes, but in Season 8.
Last time we focused on him, he was considering leaving the force, ironically. In the episode “Three Billboards,” Miles reconnects with his best friend from college while on a crime scene, and it turns out this friend has signed with a professional football team and is now living the high life. Miles is invited to a party with him, and at the party, he ends up in a fight with his friend’s right-hand man, one that ends up with Miles being offered that job. Miles seriously considers it before Tim (Eric Winter) helps him realize his place is where he is now.
But his road to this moment in time has been bumpy for Miles, who started as a cocky, know-it-all rookie, due to the fact that he wasn’t really a rookie. Instead, Miles is a Texas transfer, and technically a two-year veteran of the force. That led him to bump heads with Tim, his TO. That wasn’t helped by the fact that Tim and Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) had an ongoing bet to see which of their rookies would do best, and Miles was one of the two rookies caught in the middle.
Little by little, however, Miles grew. In every respect. He bonded with Tim. He made friends at the station, friends who even helped him when it came time to get a place to live that wasn’t his car. Because yes, Miles was homeless at the beginning of the season, and living in his car. Which was awkward when his girlfriend Camilla came into town. But at least that relationship didn’t last long. Especially considering fans are now shipping him with Celina (Liseth Chavez).
But right now, Miles should probably focus on surviving his rookie year and not on any possible romance. Though it might be interesting to see what The Rookie does with him with an entire season to develop his storyline. It is true that some sparks have flown between him and Celina, and it wouldn’t be strange to see the show develop a romantic relationship between the two. They would now have time. And if Chenford is indeed getting back together, as it seems to be the case, the show might just want to have another will-they/won’t-they relationship on standby.
However, Miles is not just interesting because of his possible relationship with Celina, but because of his relationship with Ti, too, and even because of the dynamics we’ve seen him have with Lucy and some of the other major players in the show. Everyone on The Rookie is getting promoted, and with Lucy also seemingly moving up, this show seems to be losing all the patrol officers, which makes the stories they’re telling harder to tell. Miles helps bridge that gap without being, like Tim, just another TO. And if he and Celina end up in the middle of just about every big case in Season 8, well, that’s going to be their luck. That’s the way of TV sometimes.
