If you’re a fan of TV’s The Rookie, then you were probably drawn in by the charisma and comedy wit of Firefly and Castle star Nathan Fillion. Though if you stayed around up until the current season, Season 7 – which premiered last week to an overall thematic and plot re-shuffle – it was likely Chenford who took you from “I looked” to “I’m HOOKED!”
The paring of Officer Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford (Chenford) has been through the wringer in their four years of courtship and then again in season 6 with the beloved couple’s breaking up. With the seventh season now putting the show back on the air, fans are eager to learn what’s next for the couple – if there is a next…and the actors have been more than happy to spill.
Lucy Chen Actress Melissa O’Neil On Why Chenford ‘Just Fits’
In an interview with Collider, Melissa O’Neil sat down along with Lisseth Chavez (Trainee Officer Celina Juarez) to discuss what fans can expect to see in the upcoming episodes. From what has already been revealed, it seems clear that Tim still loves Lucy and this will be shown quite evidently in this season as showrunner Alexi Hawley has promised. O’Neil herself has spoken on her perspective on Chenford, specifically if/when the couple will re-unite and how the two officers compliment each other.
“I think it’s one of those situations that, like, it’s not just opposites attract, but it’s that there are qualities that Lucy has that Tim doesn’t, and he has a ton of qualities that he possesses that she does not,” she said. “It’s not just being in an echo chamber where everyone has the same opinion, because that’s not ever the place where anybody grows… at the end of the day, when it comes to the romance aspect of it, there’s an intangible quality about people that just feels like home.”

She added, “You see that in friendships, you see that in just regular acquaintances that you suddenly just hit it off with, and you have it in those relationships. Everybody knows that feeling of being in a relationship with someone where you’re like, ‘I should love you. Everything works, but I don’t get it.’…So I think that’s one of those things about Chenford — you don’t know completely why it works, but for some reason, it just fits.”
I should love you. Everything works, but I don’t get it.
What We Can Expect From Chen In Terms of Characters Career Progression
Whilst Chenford plays a massive amount in fan interest, Lucy is very much moving toward her own goals this season with some hope of seeing more of Lucy working undercover. Chen may also be making a jump to detective this season, though there may still be a lot of ground to cover. With at least another 17 episodes left in the 18-episode season, when or if Chenford will re-ignite may be a bit of a wait for fans of the show.
New episodes of The Rookie air on Tuesdays on ABC.
