Lucifer Star Tom Ellis Opens Up About His Upcoming FBI Spinoff Series

Lucifer star Tom Ellis is working on an FBI spinoff series. The show, titled CIA, will be released on CBS.

Speaking to TV Line, Ellis discussed the hotly-anticipated series, noting that it will follow roughly “the same format set up on FBI,” and will “explore the notion of why these agencies don’t normally work together.” Ellis went on to describe the unlikely pairing of FBI and CIA agents as “productive but also very difficult, because they have very different philosophies on how to achieve goals.”

CIA will star Ellis as Agent Hart Hoxton, who is “stuck in the ‘boring’ end of the job on home soil in New York.” According to the actor, “he is someone who has to use guile and deceit and lies to get what he wants. There’s large [doses] of moral ambiguity that comes with him.” Hoxton will team up with a seasoned FBI agent who is the complete opposite in terms of tactics and beliefs, although the role of the series’ leading FBI agent has yet to be cast.

Per the official logline, “CIA is a one-hour crime drama centered on two unlikely partners – a fast-talking, rule-breaking loose cannon CIA case officer (Ellis), and a by-the-book, seasoned and smart FBI agent who believes in the rule of law. When this odd couple are assigned to work out of the CIA’s New York Station, they must learn to work together to investigate cases and criminals posing threats on U.S. soil, finding that their differences may actually be their strength.”

CBS Has A Large FBI Franchise

FBI premiered on CBS in 2018 to largely positive reviews from critics. The series’ main cast is led by Missy Peregrym as FBI Special agent Maggy Bell, Zeeko Zaki as Special Agent Omar Adom Zidan, Jeremy Sisto as Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jubal Valentine, and Alana de la Garza as Special Agent in Charge Isobel Castille.

Since its debut, FBI has amassed a 135-episode run across seven seasons to date. The series has also been expanded with the 2020 spinoff FBI: Most Wanted and the 2021 spinoff, FBI International. Both spinoffs were recently canceled by CBS after six and four seasons, respectively. Despite these developments, the mainline FBI series is still going strong, with an eighth season currently expected to premiere on CBS sometime this fall to run for the upcoming 2026-2027 television season.

CIA does not currently have a release date at this time.
