LL COOL J, who spent 14 explosive seasons as fan-favorite Agent Sam Hanna on NCIS: Los Angeles, is officially returning to the franchise. CBS confirmed the Emmy-nominated actor and rapper will guest-star on NCIS Season 22, Episode 18, airing April 21. The return follows weeks of speculation after cast member Brian Dietzen teased a mysterious “someone from NCIS’ past” making an appearance.
And now we know: it’s Sam Hanna, and he’s back in action.
“Back on set, baby! NCIS. Let’s get it,” LL COOL J said in an Instagram video, flashing that signature grin from the set.

Hanna’s story didn’t end when NCIS: Los Angeles wrapped in May 2023. LL COOL J brought the character to NCIS: Hawai’i for its third season, seamlessly integrating into Jane Tennant’s elite team. While his arrival was cloaked in mystery, it was ultimately revealed that Hanna was training a new task force: NCIS Elite.
And though Hawai’i wrapped with a heartfelt farewell and a luau under the stars, fans weren’t ready to say goodbye—and clearly, neither was CBS.
“We were fully on-board, both because Sam was a great character, but also because LL COOL J is a wonderful human,” the NCIS: Hawai’i creative team said in a statement. “The chemistry he shared with Vanessa Lachey was so compelling, we had hoped to keep it going for many seasons to come.”
