LL Cool J Is Back in Action: Sam Hanna Returns to NCIS in Explosive Guest Spot

The fan-favorite agent from NCIS: Los Angeles is stepping back into the field – and he’s not done yet.

LL Cool J is suiting up once again as Special Agent Sam Hanna—and the NCIS universe just got a lot more exciting.

The rapper, actor, and longtime NCIS: Los Angeles star confirmed on Instagram that he will appear in a special guest role on NCIS Season 22, marking a major return to the franchise. His comeback episode is set to air April 21, and judging by his energy on set, it’s a moment fans won’t want to miss.

“Back on set, baby! NCIS. Let’s get it,” LL Cool J said in a surprise behind-the-scenes video posted from the filming location.

From LA to DC: Sam Hanna’s Journey Comes Full Circle

LL Cool J originated the role of Sam Hanna in 2009 during NCIS Season 6 before headlining NCIS: Los Angeles for 14 seasons alongside Chris O’Donnell. Since LA wrapped in 2023, Sam hasn’t stayed idle—he crossed over into NCIS: Hawaiʻi for several appearances in 2023 and 2024.

Now, his reappearance in the flagship series raises big questions. What brings Sam Hanna to Washington, D.C.? And what unfinished business does he have with the team?

Brian Dietzen, who plays Dr. Jimmy Palmer, had recently teased to TV Insider that “someone from NCIS’ past” would show up. “It’s going to be fantastic,” he hinted. “I think people are really going to lose their s—.” Well, mission accomplished.

A Character Steeped in Loss, Loyalty, and Legacy

Sam Hanna’s storyline remains one of the most compelling in the NCIS franchise. The former Navy SEAL and devoted father endured profound tragedy with the death of his wife, Michelle Hanna (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor), a CIA agent who was killed in NCIS: LA Season 8. Her death from carbon monoxide poisoning still lingers in Sam’s psyche—and informs the way he approaches every mission.

His character balances tactical skill with emotional depth, and fans have long connected with both his fierce loyalty and his haunted resilience.

The Larger NCIS Universe Keeps Expanding

NCIS continues to evolve and grow, even 22 seasons in. CBS recently announced renewals for a 23rd season of the original show, as well as for prequel series NCIS: Origins and international spinoff NCIS: Sydney. These new chapters ensure the franchise remains one of television’s most enduring and adaptable crime dramas.

And with LL Cool J’s return, it’s clear the franchise is embracing both its past and future.

“This Is Just Another Side of Me”

Beyond the badge, LL Cool J (real name James Todd Smith) is a trailblazer in entertainment. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly last year about his long-awaited new album, he reflected on his multifaceted career and compared himself to other artists-turned-actors like Ice Cube and Will Smith.

“We all have different sides,” he said. “Whether it’s film or television or music, it all comes from a place of passionate expression.”

Don’t Miss the Return

The countdown is on. Sam Hanna’s return to NCIS will air April 21 on CBS, and it’s sure to be more than just a cameo. It’s a nod to the franchise’s legacy—and perhaps a glimpse at what’s still to come.

So don’t call it a comeback. He’s always been part of the team.
