Kevin Costner Would “Love” To Return To ‘Yellowstone’ For Final Chapter
Costner hasn’t given up hope that he’ll be asked to reprise his role as John Dutton for the second half of season five.
Kevin Costner finally opened up about his future on Yellowstone.
Speaking with ET at CinemaCon Tuesday, the actor answered the question that’s been weighing on fans of the Paramount hit since last year: will Costner reprise the role of John Dutton for the show’s final chapter?
“I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to,” he told the outlet. “…I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out—I hope it does—but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”
Costner also admitted to brainstorming ways for his Yellowstone character’s story to end, even though it’s ultimately up to showrunner Taylor Sheridan to decide.
“Well, you know, he needs to be proactive in what happens and I’ve kind of had my own fantasy how it might be, but that’s Taylor’s thing,” the Oscar winner told ET. “I said as much to him a while back. I had thoughts how it could happen, but we just have to see.”
Costner isn’t the only big name waiting on a call from Sheridan about the second half of season five. Lainey Wilson recently told ET that she too is unclear on her future with the show.
It’s been almost a year since Costner’s early exit from Yellowstone sent shockwaves through the television world.
After months of speculation, Costner revealed in a September child support hearing that it was a “long, hard-fought negotiation” about splitting season five into two parts that spurred his decision to leave the show. He went on to reveal that there were “no scripts written” for the second part of season five and “they still hadn’t finished” the first part of the season at the time.
As such, Costner said that Yellowstone was beginning to get in the way of his own Western epic, the two-part movie series Horizon: An American Saga, that he famously took out a mortgage to fund. He said he changed his schedule to shoot the first part of season five, adding, per People, that “that’s a big deal in this world.” In the end, filming Yellowstone twice a year simply wouldn’t work for him.
Filming on the second half of Yellowstone’s highly anticipated fifth and final season is reportedly scheduled to begin this spring. It is set to premiere in November 2024—a year after it was originally slated to return.
This is a developing story.
