Kevin Costner Honors The Late Dabney Coleman His Yellowstone Father

Although Kevin Costner is currently at the Cannes Film Festival to premiere his epic movie Horizon, he took the time to honor the late Dabney Coleman. Coleman’s last acting role was as John Dutton Sr. in Yellowstone. Coleman died at the age of 92 on May 15. Posting on his Instagram Stories, the Field Of Dreams star posted a heartfelt tribute.

Firstly, he shared some flashback stills from the memorable scene that is at the heart of the series. Costner wrote, “One of the most heart wrenching scenes I’ve been part of. What an honor to have gotten to work with Dabney Coleman. May he rest in peace.”

Dabney Coleman was only in one episode of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. However, this flashback scene explains why Costner’s John Dutton will never sell the ranch to anyone, despite offers and threats. Most of all, it shows what sort of relationship Costner’s character had with his father. This is a huge part of Costner’s character’s arc.

Taylor Sheridan Looked Up To Dabney Coleman

In addition to Kevin Costner, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan told Deadline why Dabney Coleman was such a big part of his career. Firstly, he shared that he was able to “work with Dabney in 2003. He recalled learning “priceless lessons” from the Tootsie star. That includes “the power of simplicity as an artist.” Sheridan also revealed that Coleman showed him how to be graceful. “I witnessed Dabney’s humility, grace, and patience (-with my 10,000 questions).”

I never forgot those lessons and was humbled myself when he agreed to appear on Yellowstone. His performance was yet another lesson in bravery and emotional honesty.

Finally, he shared, “Dabney Coleman is a treasure. He will be missed and admired, always.”

Dabney Coleman had a prolific career that included such classic movies as 9 to 5, and WarGames, and On Golden Pond. He also hosted Saturday Night Live. Coleman was nominated for a half dozen Emmys and won one. He often played a curmudgeon and had a lot of fun with that sort of role. His final role was as John Dutton Sr. on Yellowstone. He died at his home in Santa Monica.
