Kayce Dutton Returns: The Yellowstone Spinoff That Finally Gets It Right

Kayce Dutton’s Yellowstone spinoff, Y: Marshals, is bringing key characters back into the fold, honoring one of the franchise’s best elements. Following its conclusion, Yellowstone has several upcoming spinoffs that will continue the epic story, including Luke Grimes’ series, the franchise’s first major network TV show.

Beth and Rip also have a spinoff coming, with Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser returning to their roles. It’s said their show, tentatively titled The Dutton Ranch, will share the most DNA with the original. However, Kayce’s spinoff officially boasts one of Yellowstone’s best elements, forging a meaningful connection to John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) series.

Kayce’s spinoff is set to air on CBS in spring 2026, and the series is beginning to take form. A trailer for Y: Marshals previewed Kayce alongside some of his new teammates, a team of U.S. Marshals, with Dutton saying that he’s “changing paths” while trying to “find a new beginning.”

Whatever Kayce’s next chapter brings, it appears that his confidants, Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty), will continue guiding his journey. According to Deadline, the actors have officially joined Kayce’s new show, bolstering Y: Marshal‘s cast with familiar faces.

That’s promising for the spinoff, since Thomas and Mo incorporated a vital Native American representation into the Western series. Additionally, their connection to Kayce led to some of his best stories in Yellowstone, playing a critical role in Dutton’s development — and it appears that this will carry into Y: Marshals.

What Thomas Rainwater & Mo’s Yellowstone Return Means For Y: Marshals

Y: Marshals officially including the Broken Rock tribal members, hopefully, means that their stories will continue. In Yellowstone season 5, Thomas and Mo are embroiled in a critical fight over the tribe’s land, which is being developed for a pipeline that threatens their water reservoir.

In Yellowstone season 5’s finale, Mo leads a group of supporters to retaliate, dumping some of the construction materials into the water and significantly disrupting the project. The storyline highlighted a pivotal battle within many Indigenous communities, addressing the contemporary challenges they face.

While Mo’s mission was successful, Thomas merely halted the pipeline’s development, and the Brock Rock Tribe’s fight is far from over. That said, hopefully, Y: Marshals will continue to tell the Native Americans’ story, perhaps roping Kayce back into the battle for their land that now includes the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch that he sold them in Yellowstone’s finale.

We can also assume that Thomas and Mo will play a considerable role in Kayce’s story, guiding him in his next chapter, which, according to the cast listing so far, will not include his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille). As Dutton’s trusted advisors, it appears Thomas and Mo will be more important to Kayce than ever in Y: Marshals.
