Sylvie Brett has officially left Chicago Fire. After nine years and nearly 200 episodes, Brett’s story concluded with her move to Oregon to build a life with her husband, Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer). Killmer recently shared her thoughts on her departure with The Hollywood Reporter. While she admitted she would miss the cast and crew, she expressed excitement about exploring fresh opportunities in her career.

After nearly a decade of portraying Brett, Killmer felt she had taken the character as far as she could. Reflecting on her time with Chicago Fire, she said it was time to challenge herself creatively:
“I’ll be excited to try something that’s totally new. Hopefully, the next thing, the next few things, that I get to work on will be a little bit of a different flavor.”
Killmer shared that she began auditioning for new roles even before filming her final scenes on Chicago Fire. She credited her time on the show with honing her acting skills and expressed gratitude to Dick Wolf Productions for the opportunities it provided.
Though she acknowledged that her next project might not match the long-term success of Chicago Fire, Killmer is eager to “switch gears” and dive into the “interesting new content” being produced in the industry today.
Killmer’s Recent Work Outside One Chicago
Killmer hasn’t taken on many roles outside of the One Chicago franchise in recent years. Her last television project outside of the series was the 2018 TV movie Sleeper (aka My Husband’s Secret Life), and her most recent feature film role was in the 2015 historical drama Beyond the Mask, where she starred opposite John Rhys-Davies.
In 2019, she appeared in a short film titled The Follower, but since then, her career has been centered on Chicago Fire.
What’s Next for Kara Killmer?
Killmer is actively auditioning for a variety of roles in television and film, seeking projects that offer a different “flavor” from her work on Chicago Fire. Fans may not have to say goodbye to Sylvie Brett forever, though. Killmer left the door open for a potential return to the series, telling The Hollywood Reporter:
“The door is wide open for me! I’m more than happy to show up anytime.”
