Kaley Cuoco, star of The Big Bang Theory, has found herself at the center of controversy after sharing the emotional story of rehoming her long-time dog, Shirley, due to conflicts with her fiancé Tom Pelphrey’s German Shepherd, Blue. Cuoco opened up about the difficult decision in a heartfelt Instagram video, which simultaneously announced Shirley’s recent passing.
A Heartbreaking Choice
Cuoco began her video by addressing the absence of Shirley from her social media. “Most of you know I had [Shirley] for many, many, many years,” she said. “All of a sudden, you kind of stopped seeing her, and I started to get a lot of questions… because it’s very unlike me to stop posting about a dog I’ve had since she was six weeks old.”
The actress revealed that as her relationship with Pelphrey deepened, Shirley’s escalating aggression toward Blue became a serious concern. “Unfortunately, Blue and Shirley started getting into some mega fights,” Cuoco explained. “Shirley was determined to kill Blue, and things just kept getting worse.”
Fearing harm to either dog—or even to someone trying to intervene—Cuoco decided to rehome Shirley. The actress entrusted her beloved dog to her pet handler, Tony, and his wife Angie, who had already been helping care for Shirley. “They have loved her so, so much, and it was an excruciating decision,” Cuoco shared.
Saying Goodbye to Shirley
Cuoco’s emotional video also revealed that Shirley had recently passed away from a fast-progressing bone cancer at nearly 14 years old. “That’s an unbelievable life for a dog,” Cuoco said tearfully, reflecting on the joy Shirley brought to her life. She thanked her followers for their support and understanding but acknowledged the difficulty of her decision.

Despite her candid confession, Cuoco has faced significant backlash from fans, many of whom criticized her for choosing her relationship over her dog. Angry comments flooded social media, with some accusing her of treating Shirley as “disposable.”
