Kaley Cuoco to Star and Produce New HBO Comedy After Success in Based on a True Story

Kaley Cuoco, best known for her role as Penny in The Big Bang Theory, is set to headline a brand-new comedy series titled Kansas City Star for HBO. The series comes from the creative minds behind Hacks—Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky. In addition to playing the lead, Cuoco will also serve as an executive producer, showcasing her talents both in front of and behind the camera.

A New Role with a Familiar Twist

In Kansas City Star, Cuoco will portray a “semi-famous actress” who returns to her small-town roots to work with a local theater troupe. While specific plot details are still under wraps, the premise promises plenty of opportunities for Cuoco to flex her comedic skills and explore a character that is both relatable and unique. The show marks a return to television for the actress after her recent successes, highlighting her growing influence as both an actor and producer.

Cuoco Returns in Based on a True Story Season 2

Before Kansas City Star debuts, fans can catch Cuoco in the second season of the dark comedy Based on a True Story, premiering on Peacock in the U.S. on November 21. The first season introduced audiences to Ava (played by Cuoco) and her husband Nathan (Chris Messina), a couple who exploit the true-crime craze by creating a podcast featuring a real-life serial killer in Los Angeles.

The upcoming season promises even more twists and turns as Ava and Nathan navigate the challenges of parenthood while dealing with a copycat killer on the loose. The official synopsis teases a dramatic continuation, with Ava attempting to focus on her family and real estate career while Nathan coaches tennis. However, a series of new murders pulls her back into the dangerous world of true crime. The big question remains: Is their former podcast subject Matt, played by Tom Bateman, behind these new killings? And has Ava’s sister Tory, played by Liana Liberato, become entangled with the killer?

The new season will also feature Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Drew, a new mom who forms a friendship with Ava and might be hiding secrets of her own.

Where to Watch

Season 2 of Based on a True Story premieres on November 21 on Peacock in the U.S. For viewers in the U.K., the series will be available on Sky and NOW, continuing the darkly humorous and thrilling storyline that captivated fans in its debut season.
