As the Big Bang Theory universe continues to grow, Kaley Cuoco has shared her openness to reprising her beloved role as Penny. The actress, who starred in all 12 seasons of the hit CBS series, recently reflected on her time with the show during an interview with PEOPLE. Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, the original series focused on a group of socially awkward scientists and their friends, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon from 2007 to 2019.
“I spent 12 years playing that role, and it really set off my career,” Cuoco said, expressing deep gratitude for the experience. “I owe a lot to that character, to that show, to [creator] Chuck Lorre. It was some of the best years of my life and some of the most fun I’ve ever had.”
When asked about the possibility of returning to the role, Cuoco didn’t hesitate: “I would 100% be open to reprising the role of Penny. I love that character, and I always will.”
Her remarks come on the heels of similar comments made by her former co-star Jim Parsons, who played Sheldon Cooper. Parsons, while discussing a potential return to the Big Bang world, shared his mixed feelings. He emphasized that the original show was “lightning in a bottle” and expressed doubts about whether a reboot could capture the same magic. However, he also said, “I never say never to anything… Life just changes so much.”
What’s Next for The Big Bang Theory Universe?
Although the original Big Bang Theory concluded in 2019, its universe is far from over. The spinoff Young Sheldon, which focused on a young version of Parsons’ character, wrapped up earlier this year. Meanwhile, a new spinoff, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, recently premiered, continuing the story of Georgie Cooper and Mandy McAllister, played by Montana Jordan and Emily Osment. This show is part of the Big Bang Theory universe and airs Thursdays on CBS.
Additionally, another Big Bang Theory-based series is reportedly in the works, with Kevin Sussman, Brian Posehn, and Lauren Lapkus set to return to their original roles. Reports suggest that this new show will center around Sussman’s character, Stuart, and his comic book store, a beloved location from the original series.
Cuoco’s Upcoming Projects
In addition to her possible return to The Big Bang Theory, Cuoco is keeping busy with other projects. She is set to return for season 2 of Based on a True Story, a Peacock series that satirizes society’s obsession with true crime. The show follows a realtor (played by Cuoco) and a former tennis star who launch a podcast about a local murder. The second season is scheduled to debut on November 21, and Cuoco is excited for fans to see what’s in store.
“We had such a great time shooting season 1, and I think that we made an even better season 2,” she said. “It’s very funny. It’s very dark… and I’m thrilled.”
As fans eagerly await the next chapter of the Big Bang Theory universe, Cuoco’s openness to returning as Penny provides hope that we may see more of her iconic character in the future. Whether it’s a cameo or a larger role, Cuoco’s love for Penny and the show is clear, making her a key figure in the expanding universe of The Big Bang Theory.
