“Just different enough that it wasn’t creepy”: Jim Parsons Keeps Up the Suspense About His Return to Iconic Role as Sheldon Cooper
Jim Parsons on his experience of reprising his character of Sheldon Cooper in Young Sheldon.
Jim Parsons is one of the most well-known TV actors. He is most popular for his performance as the socially awkward science genius Sheldon Cooper in the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory. He has received numerous accolades for his portrayal of Sheldon.
Sheldon Cooper became such a beloved character over the twelve seasons of the sitcom that it spawned a spin-off named Young Sheldon. After airing for seven seasons, the spin-off is finally coming to an end with a finale that will see Parsons reprising his role as Sheldon. He recently opened up about his feelings regarding this.
The Big Bang Theory Was Jim Parsons’ Big Break
Much like his character Sheldon Cooper who happens to be a genius but struggles with fitting into society, Jim Parsons too struggled with finding his place in the entertainment industry. According to the Houston Chronicle, he had auditioned for 15-30 television pilots. He would not get the role at times, and when he did, the show would not be purchased by any television network.
Then came the role of Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, and it turned out to be a match made in heaven. Parsons embodies the character with such precision that one cannot help but appreciate his performance as the senior theoretical physicist at the California Institute of Technology.
Jim Parsons Did Not Reveal Anything About His Return as Sheldon Cooper
Years of watching Sheldon grow and develop on their TV screens caused people to be curious about his early years. Consequently, Young Sheldon was made to fulfill the demands of the viewers. Iain Armitage is seen as the younger version of Parsons’ Sheldon in the show.
With Young Sheldon‘s finale episode scheduled to be released in May, The Normal Heart star will be reprising his role as Cooper alongside his former co-star Mayim Bialik (via PEOPLE), who portrayed Sheldon’s love interest and later wife in The Big Bang Theory.
Although Parsons recently spoke on an episode of Today about how he is feeling about his return as Sheldon on the show, he did not give away any details about the first and perhaps only appearance of characters from the original show. All plot details about the series finale are still under tight wraps.
Jim Parsons on His Experience of Reprising Sheldon Cooper
The Boys in the Band star has worked as a narrator and executive producer on all seven seasons of Young Sheldon. However, the finale will mark his first physical appearance on the show. During his appearance on the most recent episode of Today, he reflected on his experience of reprising the role, saying:
“Big Bang Theory was always a live-audience show and Young Sheldon is a single-camera show, and I got to do it with Mayim — we both played Sheldon and Amy from the series — and to do it in that situation, it was just different enough that it wasn’t creepy.”
Parsons also said that playing the role once again was sweet and he was very grateful that he and Bialik got the chance to do it.
All seasons of Young Sheldon are available for streaming on Max.
