Johnny Galecki’s Unexpected Health Scare and Chuck Lorre’s Heroic Response
Leonard Hofstadter of The Big Bang Theory fame, Johnny Galecki, almost had a real-life cliffhanger. Between seasons 4 and 5 of the smash-hit sitcom, Galecki experienced a terrifying medical episode. He was convinced he had a stroke because his eyes turned teary and his face drooped.
Initially, the Emmy-nominated actor thought it was some sort of allergy, so he chugged some allergic pills and slept off. But in the morning, things were the same and he was still teary. Explaining this scenario, the 49-year-old actor revealed in an interview with TV Line,
I was at my sister’s house and kept getting teary out of my right eye. I took allergy medicine and when I woke up, I was still teary, but this time I was also drooling and one side of my face was entirely drooping.
Panicked, Galecki called show creator Chuck Lorre, ready to not only say goodbye to Leonard but also offer his writing services! Thankfully, Lorre, ever the hero, didn’t need a scriptwriter. Recognizing Galecki’s symptoms, he diagnosed Bell’s palsy, a temporary facial paralysis. Galecki recalled during the interview:
I called Chuck and told him I was paralyzed on my right side. I said, ‘I’m going to help you recast my role, and I would love it if you would also consider me for a staff writing position on the show.’ But Chuck later said ‘It sounds like you have Bell’s palsy’.”
Galecki recovered, and The Big Bang Theory continued its reign (with him becoming one of the world’s highest-paid TV actors, no less!). This highlights the strong bond between Galecki and Lorre. A bond forged not just in the sitcom’s success, but in a moment of vulnerability. Talk about a friendship that went boldly where no friendship had gone before.
