The Sheldon Cooper actor had a candid response when he was asked whether he shares his character’s love for all-things pop culture.
The Big Bang Theory featured actor Jim Parsons in the role of Sheldon Cooper, a genius scientist with an undying love for all things pop culture. In the series, Sheldon’s love for movies, comic books, and TV shows across the superhero, sci-fi, and fantasy genres is well-established.
The two franchises Sheldon loves the most are Star Trek and Doctor Who. Throughout the series, Sheldon makes several references to these two franchises. However, Parsons himself isn’t a fan of the franchises and admitted the same during an interview. Here is what Parsons had to say about Sheldon’s love for pop culture differing from his own interests.
The Big Bang Theory Star Jim Parsons Hasn’t Watched Star Trek or Doctor Who

During an interview with Time, Parsons admitted that he wasn’t a fan of popular franchises such as Star Trek and Doctor Who, which Sheldon loves in the sitcom. Parsons said:
I get asked a lot of, of course, science things. I’m like, ‘You’re kidding.’ And even the pop culture. … I’ve never seen Star Trek. I don’t know Doctor Who.
From Parsons’ words, it is clear that the actor does not share his character’s love for pop culture, especially when it comes to Sheldon’s most beloved franchise.
During a separate interview, Parsons admitted that learning the dialog revolving around Sheldon rambling about his love for pop culture was particularly difficult to get used to. However, the character’s popularity proves that Parsons got a handle on the same as time passed.
Jim Parsons’ Favorite Movie Is a Far Cry From His The Big Bang Theory Character
In the series, Sheldon loves everything from Marvel and DC superheroes to sci-fi shows such as Star Trek, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, and many more. However, Parsons’ interests are the polar opposite of his character’s and it became most evident when the actor revealed one of his favorite films.
During an interview with USA Today, Parsons spoke about his love for a 1983 classic tragicomedy. The actor revealed that Terms of Endearment, starring Debra Winger and Shirley MacLaine was one of his favorite films.
It’s truly one of my favorite movies ever; I’ve watched it many times.
Parsons made the above statement regarding the Academy Award-winning film, proving that his taste in pop culture differs from that of Sheldon Cooper.
On the other hand, Parsons reportedly also enjoys watching different sports, including basketball, football, and tennis. The actor is a fan of the Houston Rockets and tennis player Roger Federer, which further reiterates how dissimilar he and Sheldon are when it comes to their interests.
