Jim Parsons Breaks Silence on Appearing in a Big Bang Theory Sequel

Jim Parsons has shared his thoughts on possibly reprising his role as Sheldon Cooper in a new Big Bang Theory sequel series.

After being part of Young Sheldon’s finale alongside Mayim Bialik, Jim Parsons has finally opened up about a potential return as Sheldon Cooper in a sequel to The Big Bang Theory. Reprising the role after five years has added fuel to the burning question of whether there could be more to come from this older version of Sheldon in a new sequel series, but according to Parsons there are no plans for that to happen in the foreseeable future.

Sheldon Cooper’s story in The Big Bang Theory captured the attention of audiences across 12 seasons, starting in 2007 and reaching a conclusion in 2019. However, Young Sheldon ensured that the character has continued to be present in the lives of audiences, and above all else, has continued to be popular with viewers and critics.

Now that the spin-off has come to an end, fans have been wondering if they will see Parsons’ Sheldon again. While the franchise is heading in a new direction with its latest series, Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage, it seems that things are moving away from Sheldon Cooper. However, with whispers that creator Chuck Lorre has a possible sequel series in development, will the story circle back to The Big Bang Theory‘s main protagonist?

Speaking with E! News, Parsons gave a candid response to a potential return as Sheldon Cooper in a sequel to The Big Bang Theory. When asked what it would take for him to reprise his role again, the actor said:

Reincarnation. Next lifetime. Look, never say never to anything. Life is long, God willing. But I don’t think so.

Could Iain Armitage Return as Sheldon in Future?

Jim Parsons may have poured cold water on playing Sheldon again, at least for now, but where does that leave Iain Armitage? The young actor managed to deliver a version of Sheldon just as memorable as Parsons’, but after the end of his series, how and when could he return? While some members of the Young Sheldon cast could appear in the Georgie and Mandy spin-off, at the end of the show, Sheldon went to Caltech to continue his education as a physicist, so his appearances in the new series could be very sporadic. In the meantime, it seems that another spin-off series focused solely on Sheldon in the right time period is unlikely.

In an interview with Glamour, Young Sheldon‘s executive producer, Steve Molaro, confessed that there is no great interest in showing the character’s life at Caltech:

“And a show called Young Sheldon, where he’s in California now and everyone picking up the pieces of the loss of George… It wasn’t something we felt like we could just jump in or overflowing with ideas we were excited about. I would not have been comfortable digging in on Sheldon at Caltech. Now it’s really trying to be a weird pre-Big Bang. That doesn’t get me excited. Like, there’s the cafeteria set, but he hasn’t met Leonard yet. I don’t know. Weird.”
