Jesse Spencer Says Goodbye to Chicago Fire After 200 Episodes — Here’s Why He Left

The End of an Era for Matt Casey

Jesse Spencer, who portrayed Captain Matthew Casey since the pilot episode of Chicago Fire, shocked fans when he exited the series in Season 10. After nearly a decade as one of Firehouse 51’s central heroes, his goodbye marked one of the most emotional turning points in the show’s history.

The Milestone That Marked His Exit

Spencer’s final episode as a series regular aired on October 20, 2021, and was fittingly the show’s 200th episode. As fans celebrated this major achievement, the celebration came with bittersweet news: Casey would be leaving Chicago.

Why Jesse Spencer Chose to Leave

In a post-episode press conference, Spencer explained that his decision was deeply personal:

“I realized I’ve been doing TV for 18 straight years,” he said, referencing his time on House prior to Chicago Fire. “I wanted to take a break and spend more time with my family.”

A Well-Considered Exit

Spencer emphasized there was no drama behind the scenes. He had discussed his departure with the writers and producers well in advance so the storyline could reflect Casey’s values and growth.

“I think it was the right time,” he noted, “and the way Casey left — it made sense.”

Captain Casey’s Farewell in the Series

In the storyline, Casey leaves Chicago to take guardianship of his late friend’s sons in Oregon — a selfless decision true to his character. His final scenes with Stella, Brett, Severide, and Boden were filled with emotion and closure.

A Tearful Goodbye to Brett

Of particular note was his parting with Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer). Though the couple had only recently found their rhythm, Casey’s choice to leave put their relationship on pause.

“I don’t want to say goodbye,” Brett whispers through tears — and fans felt the heartbreak too.

Will Jesse Spencer Return?

Though Spencer left as a series regular, he made clear the door was open for guest appearances.

“This is not goodbye forever,” he said. “I still live in Chicago. I’m open to popping in.”

Indeed, he returned briefly in Season 11’s finale for Severide’s wedding, proving his bond with the show remains strong.

What’s Next for Jesse Spencer?

While Spencer hasn’t announced any major new TV roles, he’s been enjoying life away from the hectic pace of weekly drama production. He spends more time in Australia with his wife and family and has said he’s open to new creative opportunities — including directing.

A Departure Done Right

Too often, long-running characters are written off abruptly or with little explanation. Jesse Spencer’s departure from Chicago Fire was the opposite — thoughtful, respectful, and true to who Matt Casey has always been. And for fans, there’s always hope he’ll be back in Firehouse 51 again.
