Supernatural alum Jensen Ackles is set to make a significant return to Tracker in its highly anticipated second season. Ackles will reprise his role as Russell Shaw, the estranged older brother of Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw, in the hit CBS drama.
During the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, Hartley confirmed Ackles’ return, much to the delight of fans. “We got him, he’s coming back,” Hartley announced during the Tracker presentation. “We’re having fun with that, it’s a great story.” Showrunner Elwood Reid added to the excitement by revealing that Ackles would feature in multiple episodes, teasing a substantial story arc that he’s “particularly excited” about.
Reid, who previously worked with Ackles on ABC’s Big Sky, where Ackles joined as a main cast member for its third and final season, spoke fondly of their collaboration. “It’s like family — when we text him [he says], ‘tell me where and tell me when,’ and he shows up. He’s just that kind of guy,” Reid shared. Ackles first appeared as Russell Shaw in the penultimate episode of Season 1, “Off the Books,” which aired on May 12.
Balancing Tracker and Prime Video’s Countdown
Ackles’ return to Tracker comes amidst fan speculation that his involvement in a new Prime Video series might prevent him from continuing on the CBS show. The actor is set to star in Countdown, a thrilling new series developed specifically for him. Announced in June 2024, Countdown will see Ackles take on the role of LAPD officer Mark Meachum, who is recruited to join a secret task force of undercover agents from various branches of law enforcement.
The series kicks off with a suspicious murder in broad daylight, leading Meachum and his team into the heart of a sinister conspiracy threatening the lives of millions. As the plot unravels, the team must navigate their personal conflicts and unite to save the city.
Despite his commitment to Countdown, Ackles’ involvement in Tracker Season 2 has been secured, ensuring that fans will see more of Russell Shaw’s complex relationship with his brother Colter. With Ackles set to play a larger role in Tracker’s unfolding drama, Season 2 promises to deliver even more intense and emotional moments as the Shaw brothers confront their shared past and the new challenges that lie ahead.
