Jenna Ortega Confirms Wednesday Won’t Have Any Love Interests In Season 2

In conversation with Elle Fanning for the “Actors on Actors” video series by Variety, Jenna Ortega revealed that there won’t be any love interests in Wednesday season 2. Ortega, who will reprise her role as Wednesday as well as serving as a producer next season, explained that Wednesday season 2 will eschew the romance storylines in order to focus more on the horror elements of the popular show. Wednesday season 1 had a love interest problem, with even Ortega herself being critical of the love triangle, so it seems this decision is a way of course correcting the show.

Dropping Wednesday’s Romances Is Great News For Wednesday Season 2

While the news that there won’t be any love interests is a disappointment for those hoping to see a romance blossom between Wednesday and Enid, it’s good news overall for Wednesday season 2. Moving away from the romance aspect is one of the ways Wednesday season 2 is improving on season 1 as the lackluster love triangle between Wednesday, Tyler, and Xavier was one of the biggest complaints about the debut season.

While a romance between Wednesday and Enid might make for more interesting viewing than the love triangle pushed in Wednesday season 1, the show truly shines when it leans into the titular character’s macabre personality, the Addams family history, and Wednesday’s growing friendships with Enid and Eugene. Wednesday season 1 dulled some of its edges by devoting too much time to teen drama-esque storylines and having Wednesday behave in out of character ways; moving away from romantic subplots altogether is the best way to combat the criticisms in Wednesday season 2.
