Fans recognize Jason Beghe instantly for his gravel-throated delivery as Sgt. Hank Voight on Chicago P.D. But what many don’t know is that his iconic voice wasn’t always like that—and it came at a price.
Years ago, Beghe survived a near-fatal car accident that crushed parts of his throat. The recovery was long and painful, and he permanently lost part of his vocal range. The result? A hauntingly raspy voice that became his trademark.
“That voice gave me a second life in acting,” Beghe admitted. “People remembered it—even if they didn’t remember my name.”
Ironically, the injury that nearly ended his career made him unforgettable. It’s a detail Voight fans may not know, but once you do, the voice hits different.
