Kat Dennings is returning to the world of sitcoms by joining Tim Allen in the new TV series Shifting Gears. The show is set to debut on Jan. 8 on ABC.
Ahead of the show’s arrival early next year, Dennings spoke about her role in Shifting Gears, per TV Insider. In the series, Dennings plays Riley, the daughter of Allen’s Matt Parker, the owner of a classic car remodeling and restoration shop in North Hollywood. The show picks up when Riley pops back up in a recently-widowed Matt’s life after 15 years of estrangement. As Dennings explained, her character is going through her own big life changes when she reunites with her father.
“She just shows up on his doorstep with her two kids. She’s getting a divorce, and her life is falling apart,” Dennings noted. “She has no money and she needs to stay with him. So it turns both their lives upside down.”

She also added to TV Guide Magazine, “[The characters] have such different styles and completely different beliefs. But what’s fun about them is that she is his daughter, and they are exactly the same. So when they butt heads, it’s just very, very funny.” On her co-star, she continued, “Tim’s a really amazing actor, and I’ve told him this to his face, so I’m definitely happy to say it in print!”
“Kat’s so freaking talented,” Allen also said about Dennings, noting how they have something interesting in common. “We’re born on the same day, which is kind of weird. Certainly different ages!”
An Ensemble Cast Is Featured in Shifting Gears
Also starring in the series are Seann William Scott and Daryl Mitchell as two of the employees working at Matt’s shop. Jenna Elfman will also have a recurring role as the owner of a dance studio across the street. Michelle Nader, who previously worked with Dennings on her hit sitcom 2 Broke Girls, is serving as the showrunner on the series. Dennings’ other sitcom work includes playing Bob Saget’s daughter in Raising Dad, while Allen has also starred in the hit sitcoms Home Improvement and Last Man Standing.
“I’ve done a full circle,” Allen, who also recently starred in the Disney+ series The Santa Clauses, said of returning to sitcoms. “I look around and I’m on the Disney lot, and I keep walking by the Home Improvement set, which is over that way. I sat in front of the set and they still have a sign on it: Home Improvement. I’m kind of finishing, if you will, where I started.”
He also said of Dennings and his other co-stars, “I’ve been so freaking fortunate. They all can do their own scenes, whether I like it or not, without me. And it’s just as funny without me in these scenes. Not a good thing for me!”
Shifting Gears will premiere on ABC on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025 at 8/7c on ABC.
