Art imitating life can be incidental or wholly on purpose. When it comes to Shifting Gears‘ Tim Allen with his on-screen daughter Kat Dennings, it seemed to be a little bit of both. In Shifting Gears, Allen and Dennings play an estranged father-daughter pair, Matt and Riley, who have to reunite when Riley moves back in with her two children. The pair, attributing Riley’s mom as the only reason they ever really got along, spend the season rebuilding their relationship in their forced proximity.
It comes with challenges, of course, with Riley being a stereotypical sarcastic Millennial and Matt being incredibly stuck in his ways. For Father’s Day, Allen penned an essay for AARP, reflecting on the similarities and differences between Dennings and his two real-life daughters, Katherine Allen and Elizabeth Allen Dick:
“On my new ABC show Shifting Gears, my fictional daughter (played by Kat Dennings, who’s wonderful) isn’t based explicitly on either of my actual daughters. But there are a few similarities. Kate, just like Kat on the show, is very sharp and acerbic. You can get cut pretty easily if you’re not careful. Sometimes it can be a little alarming.”
Tim Allen Has Acted With One of His Real-Life Daughters
Only one of Allen’s two daughters has stepped into the spotlight in their father’s footsteps. The younger of the two, Elizabeth Allen Dick, has recently starred alongside her father in the Disney+ series The Santa Clauses. The series is a follow-up to the three Santa Clause movies that Allen spent starring in from 1994 to 2006. The series reunites Allen with Elizabeth Mitchell as Scott and Carol try to raise their two children in the North Pole. Chaos inevitably ensues when Scott thinks about retirement.
Allen Dick plays Sandra, Allen’s daughter in the show. She’s an eccentric teen who can talk to animals, and eventually pursues her own kind of magic, enlisting the help of the Christmas Witch, La Befana (Laura San Giacomo). Allen took time in his essay to also share about his relationship with Allen Dick saying:
“Elizabeth shares my fascination with how things work and stubborn determination to fix anything. I’m really good with computers, cameras, phones and all that stuff, but sometimes I get confused. She’ll just take it out of my hand, press three buttons and it’s back on.”
