Valentine’s Day came early on The Rookie Season 7, Episode 6 “The Gala,” with devastating results for one couple, the beginning of a reconciliation for another, and a breakup for a third one. In the middle of it, there was also a gala, a desperate father looking for his daughter, and an initiative to “turn in your ex,” which ended up as more of a joke than anything else.

Who Broke Up and Who Got Back Together on The Rookie?

First, the good news. Chenford takes a solid step towards full-time reconciliation in “The Gala,” even though they are still unable to communicate their issues. It’s clear from the way the fact that Chenford slept together this episode and expressed no regret on either part that this is, somehow, the beginning of the road back to each other. But it’s going to be bumpy — that’s for sure.

Because after the two sleep together post-gala, Tim (Eric Winter) wants to tell Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) that it meant something more to him than just a hookup, however, he falls short of actually uttering the words. Lucy clearly wants it to mean more too; she’s just waiting for Tim to be the one to take the initiative—which, considering he’s the one who broke up with her, feels fair. And in the end, no one says anything and Lucy walks away from Tim’s room.

Later, they meet in the elevator and agree there are no regrets, which doesn’t feel like a fix, but it is the opening of a door that was closed before. Even if just a crack. The show still has plenty of time to get these two where it needs them to be before the season ends.

But there’s trouble in paradise for another couple: Bailey (Jenna Dewan) and Nolan (Nathan Fillion). Nolan confronts Bailey about the fact that she was texting a hitman out of fear about her ex, Jason. He’s mad because she broke the law, and neglected to tell him. She’s mad because he doesn’t understand her fear. The two end up leaving the gala separately, and at the end of the episode, when Nolan comes home, Bailey has left him a message saying she’s going to sleep at the firehouse.

Not only that, the message clearly states she doesn’t know how they come back from this. And as Nolan sits there, he doesn’t seem to have any answers, either.

Then there’s Miles, who parts ways with his girlfriend Camilla. It’s the right choice for both of them, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt. She was with Miles for years, and he feels like he owes her because she stayed with him after he got injured and lost his possible NFL career. But he doesn’t love her anymore, and she, in turn, doesn’t want to move and give up her dreams for his. So, they break up, and in many ways, it’s the only relationship decision in this episode we are fully on board with.

At least, that way the show can move on with Miles — even if that doesn’t mean writing him another love interest anytime soon. As for Chenford, things might not be fixed yet, but at least they are looking up. If we have to worry about anyone, it’s Bailey and Nolan.
