Is ‘The Rookie’ Ever Going to Give Us Closure? Season 7 Finale Breakdown

I’m such a huge fan of The Rookie, but my main criticism this season has been that there hasn’t been a lot of closure to the main storylines. Chenford is still an incredibly slow-burn romance, and big villains Monica Stevenson (Bridget Regan) and Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave) keep resurfacing with no true forward momentum. Unfortunately, this week’s finale episode just provided us with more of the same. Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) are still not officially a couple, and even after battling John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), Oscar is, once again, in the wind. I’m hoping the Rookie writers are just setting up compelling storylines for Season 8, but right now, I’m kind of bummed that there are so many open-ended plots.

Lucy Tries To Adjust to Night Shift Duty in ‘The Rookie’

Our girl, Lucy, has been promoted to sergeant, but unfortunately, that also means an assignment change. She’s now working the night shift, which is a difficult adjustment for her. Besides the need for a lot of caffeine and struggling to sleep during the day, Lucy answers a ton of boring false alarm calls. She also discovers that her new squad calls themselves the Dream Team because they find a quiet place to park, and then sleep the entire shift! They are definitely not the hardworking cops that Lucy is used to working with. However, there is one call that the squad actually pulls it together for.

Miles Penn (Deric Augustine) has decided to give dating apps a try now that he’s single. Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) tries to offer guidance, but Tim is the one that provides the best advice. He recommends that Miles remove his occupation from his profile. Before Miles can do that, he matches with a girl named Rina (Stevie Lynn Jones). On their first date, she seems overly interested in Miles’ job, which sets off red flags for him. Turns out, Rina’s brother is in the Eastern Front gang (who are clearly out for revenge after their takedown in last week’s episode). They end up surrounding the restaurant, and Miles has to make a run for it. He commandeers someone’s car (I always feel so bad for the innocent people that get caught up in these things), and finds himself in a high-speed car chase. The only thing that truly saves Miles from getting taken out in this shoot-out is Lucy and her new squad. They surround the Eastern Front gang, make arrests, and save Miles. His takeaway: “I’m going to embrace the single life for a little longer.”

‘The Rookie’s Angela Solves a Bank Robbery Case in Season 7, Episode 18

In the finale, Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) is given the least dramatic storyline, but it’s still one that offers some humor. The crew responds to a bank robbery call. They arrest a hapless criminal named Julius (Scott Michael Campbell), who has decided to rob the bank because his Bulgarian girlfriend needs a heart transplant. It is immediately obvious that this dude has been catfished (just check out her AI picture with seven fingers on one hand). Julius admits that his wife is going to be furious with him, so this guy is even stupider than I thought. Angela meets with Julius’ wife, Heidi (Kelly Frye), who is dismayed that her husband was dumb enough to fall for this scam. But Heidi turns out to be hiding something. When Angela looks up the IP address for the fake girlfriend, she discovers it matches Heidi’s location. Yep, she decided to catfish her own husband for the money. She was always planning on divorcing this loser, but thought she could get some cash in her pocket before she did. She had no idea he would rob a bank, but it looks like these people kind of deserve each other. Angela arrests her, and then talks with her hubby, Wesley (Shawn Ashmore) about this being a cautionary tale that they need to reconnect as a couple.

Oscar Is Finally Back in ‘The Rookie’ Season Finale

The Rookie has been stringing us along with Oscar on the run this entire season. Looks like Nolan has been tracking his whereabouts this whole time, and he discovers that before he went to prison, Oscar was working with a crew. One of his associates buried some diamonds in the desert in Barstow, and now that he’s out of jail, it seems likely that Oscar can follow his buddy straight to the hiding place. Nolan is tasked with following this criminal, and he brings Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) out to the desert with him. They hole up in a hotel where Oscar’s friend is staying, but what they don’t know is that Oscar is watching them. While on the look-out in the middle of the night, Nolan grabs some caffeine from a vending machine outside his room, and is promptly stun-gunned by Oscar. I could see this plot development coming from a mile away, but Nolan didn’t, apparently. The next thing he knows, Nolan is riding in Oscar’s trunk, while Oscar loudly sings to Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.” While I enjoyed the musical interlude, I felt kind of annoyed that Nolan was captured so easily.

Nyla wakes up to discover Nolan is gone, and Oscar’s associate is dead. She puts the pieces together, and then recruits a kid with a drone for help locating her partner. Oscar is having Nolan march through the desert to the hiding spot. In the grossest part of the episode, Oscar has cut off his co-conspirator’s arm since it had the map to the diamonds tattooed on it. Nolan snidely points out that Oscar could have simply taken a picture of it, but Oscar admits that his prison time has made him go “full caveman.” He also confesses that Monica is the one that helped him escape from prison last season. Nolan is able to successfully dig up the diamonds, and then Nyla and the kid locate Nolan and Oscar. Nyla instructs him to launch the drone directly at Oscar. A fight ensues between Nolan and Oscar, and somehow, inexplicably, a helicopter shows up, and Oscar escapes (AGAIN!). The good news is that Nolan was able to hold onto the diamonds, but I’m furious that the end of the season is starting off the same way the last one ended.

‘The Rookie’ Season Finale Ends With Two Shockers

Throughout the episode, it seemed like we were finally going to get a development with Chenford. In one of the final scenes, Lucy comes home after a long night shift. She’s exhausted, but happy to see Tim in her apartment. He has made her an entire array of her favorite foods (swoon), and then he does what I’ve waited all season for. Lucy sits down on the couch, and Tim keeps cooking, starting out by admitting that he knows he hurt her deeply by breaking up with her. He says that he’s done a lot of work in therapy to fix what’s broken in him, and that he wants to take the next step with her. He actually asks Lucy to move in with him, and I’ve never been more thrilled. But I should have known this declaration was too good to be true. When Tim comes out from behind the counter, he sees Lucy fast asleep. She missed his entire speech! This is super frustrating, because it feels like we haven’t made any real progress with this romance at all.

The end of the episode sees some of the Mid-Wilshire gang gathering because FBI Agent Matt Garza (Felix Solis) has a major announcement. This top-secret development involves some secrets stolen from an NSA facility. Someone leveraged the information they had to get immunity, and, of course, that person would be Monica! She walks by the stunned team, a truly free woman. I’m glad that Monica is back, but it seems like this should have happened way earlier in the season. Now, we have to wait until Season 8 comes out to get any real info, and I’m not happy about it!

All episodes of The Rookie are available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.
