In Chicago Fire Season 13, Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) faces a major career decision as he prepares to retake the captain’s test. When Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) was promoted, he initially chose Herrmann as his successor. However, unexpected circumstances prevented Herrmann from taking the exam, and a new chief, Monica Pascal (Dermot Mulroney), was brought in instead.
Now, as the opportunity for the captain’s test approaches again, David Eigenberg offers insight into Herrmann’s mindset and what’s in store for the beloved firefighter.
Is Herrmann Prepared for the Captain’s Test?
According to David Eigenberg, Herrmann is far from ready for the test. Balancing his family life and responsibilities at Firehouse 51 has left him unfocused and unprepared. Eigenberg explains, “Herrmann is a family man with a lot on his plate. He’s focused when it matters most, but he’s not the most organized person when it comes to preparing for something like this.” He compares Herrmann’s personality to his own parents, saying, “When the chips are down, he’s all in. But most of the time, it’s a bit of a mess.”
Despite his blustery confidence, Herrmann often relies on guidance from his colleagues, which has been a core aspect of the character’s journey on the show. Eigenberg appreciates this dynamic, noting, “It’s been a privilege to portray a character who isn’t afraid to admit he doesn’t always know the right answer and needs support.”
Herrmann’s Take on Chief Pascal
With Pascal now leading Firehouse 51, Herrmann finds himself adjusting to a new leadership style. Pascal’s arrival was a surprise, and the transition hasn’t been easy. Eigenberg admits, “It’s always challenging to get to know a new chief. Dermot Mulroney stepped into a tough role, but he’s passionate about the show and brings a unique perspective to the character.”
The dynamic between Herrmann and Pascal is still evolving. Pascal is portrayed as a strict rule-follower, but Eigenberg hints at a deeper layer, saying, “Pascal may be stern, but there’s a genuine concern for his team. It’s an interesting contrast to Boden’s leadership style, and we’re still figuring out if the characters are allowed to like him or not.”
Will Herrmann Leave Firehouse 51?
Despite his aspirations for promotion, Herrmann is reluctant to leave Firehouse 51. “He loves the firehouse and wants to finish his career there,” Eigenberg explains. “The firehouse is his family, and he’s fiercely protective of it. If anyone threatens the safety of his team, Herrmann won’t hesitate to fight back.” Eigenberg jokes that Herrmann would use his old-school tactics to defend his crew, adding, “He has a blackjack ready for anyone who jeopardizes the humanity and safety of his people.”
What’s Next for Herrmann and Cindy?
The show also continues to explore Herrmann’s personal life, particularly his relationship with his wife, Cindy (Robyn Coffin). Eigenberg shares his admiration for Coffin, saying, “Robyn is a wonderful actor and a joy to work with. The chemistry between Herrmann and Cindy is one of my favorite parts of the show.” He hints at more scenes featuring the couple’s playful dynamic, teasing, “They had a great moment earlier in the season when Cindy took Herrmann upstairs. It was a lot of fun to film.”
What Kind of Chief Would Herrmann Be?
If Herrmann eventually takes on the role of chief, Eigenberg believes he would blend traditional and modern approaches. “Herrmann is old-school at heart, much like the real Chicago Fire Department,” Eigenberg explains. “He would do whatever it takes to protect his team, even if it means bending the rules. It’s not about following the manual; it’s about doing what’s right for the people.”
As for Boden, Eigenberg hopes to see more interactions between the two. “Boden may have moved up in the ranks, but he’s still around, and I’d love for them to share more scenes together. Their bond is special, and it’s something the fans love to see.”
Chicago Fire continues to deliver emotional and intense storylines, and Herrmann’s journey toward becoming a captain is shaping up to be one of the season’s highlights. Whether he passes the test or decides to stay at Firehouse 51, his loyalty and dedication to his team remain unwavering.
