Is Chewbacca the Last Wookie in Star Wars Universe?

The Wookiee species is one of the most popular alien races in the Star Wars fictional universe because of how cute these large beasts are. In that regard, Chewbacca has always been the face of the Wookiee race because of his importance to the Rebellion and the Resistance during the events of Star Wars Episodes IV to IX. But is Chewbacca the last Wookiee in the galaxy, and how many are there left?

Chewbacca isn’t the last Wookiee in the galaxy because there are still many Wookiees left. While we don’t know the exact number of Wookiees left in the galaxy, we do know that many still live on their home planet of Kashyyyk. It’s just that Chewbacca is the only one often featured.

Even though Chewy is the only Wookiee we often see in Star Wars, many more are in the galaxy. Still, most of them live on Kashyyyk and are not known to venture out of their homeworld. That explains why there aren’t a lot of them outside of Kashyyyk. So, with that said, let’s look at whether or not Chewbacca is the last Wookiee left.

Chewbacca Isn’t the Last Wookiee
There are a lot of strange creatures in the fictional world of Star Wars, but some of them tend to be quite cute as well. Though he may look like a weird combination of a large man, a dog, and a bear, Chewbacca became of the most popular characters in Star Wars when he was introduced in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. His species is called Wookiee, as he was merely one of the many alien species introduced during the events of the Star Wars continuity.

Of course, over the course of the Star Wars storyline, we’ve seen our fair share of different aliens. Most of these alien races have a lot of different representatives in the sense that we’ve seen quite a number of them. However, Chewbacca seems to be an exception because we haven’t seen a lot of Wookiees in Star Wars.

In the prequel movies, especially in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, we saw many Wookiees because Yoda went to visit and help them in their fight against the Separatists were invading the planet. Yoda met Chewbacca there. However, Chewbacca seems to be the only Wookiee that Star Wars was willing to show us in the next six movies.

Even though Chewbacca seems to be the only Wookiee left in the galaxy, he actually isn’t alone. He isn’t the last of his people because the Wookiees are still alive. It’s just that they weren’t featured in the events of Star Wars too much due to the actions of the Empire in the years that followed the fall of the Jedi Order.

During the reign of the Empire, the planet of Kashyyyk came under attack from the Imperials that wanted to take over the entire world due to its vast resources. Of course, the Wookiees were also some of the resources the Empire wanted because they were bigger and stronger than most other alien races in the galaxy. As such, the Empire tried to take control of the planet to enslave the Wookiees and force them to work on projects that needed their strength. In fact, Chewbacca was once enslaved by the Empire, only for Han Solo to rescue him.

How Long Do the Wookiees Live in Star Wars?
In Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, we also saw that the Wookiees tried to fight the Empire on their own home planet. That means that many Wookiees ended up losing their lives to the Empire in an attempt to chase the Imperials away from Kashyyyk.

The fact that the Wookiees were enslaved or killed during the Imperial era is why few of them are left in the galaxy. Of course, the reason why Chewbacca is the only one that’s heavily featured can be attributed to how some of the Wookiees were still enslaved during the time of the Rebellion. And during the war between the First Order and the Resistance, some of the Wookiees stayed in Kashyyyk.

There Are Still a Good Number of Wookiees Left
We don’t know how many Wookiees are left in the galaxy, but it is safe to say that a good number is left. It’s just that they aren’t featured a lot in Star Wars. Of course, Chewbacca is the most popular Wookiee we’ve seen, but there are others. Gungi, a Jedi Padawan, ended up surviving Order 66 and could return to Kashyyyk with the help of the Bad Batch. We can presume that Gungi died defending his planet from the Empire.

During the age of the Empire and the era of the New Republic, a black Wookiee named Krrsantan was active as a bounty hunter working with Darth Vader, Jabba the Hutt, and Boba Fett. Krrsantan was an exiled Wookiee due to his mean attitude.

There were also other Wookiees in the galaxy, as Leia Organa once met a politician Wookiee during a state dinner in Alderaan. Meanwhile, after the Empire’s fall, Han Solo and Chewbacca worked with Greybok to liberate Kashyyyk from the Imperial remnants that still roamed different planets all over the galaxy.

Why Aren’t There More Wookiees?
With all that said, Chewbacca isn’t the only Wookiee around but is one of many Wookiees still alive. But if that’s true, why aren’t more Wookiees featured in Star Wars? Well, it’s because the Wookiees like to keep to themselves.

The Wookiees prefer to stay in their homes and are very protective of their forests in Kashyyyk. While they aren’t primitive people, they have a good relationship with nature and the forests of their home planet, and that’s why they don’t have the massive cities that the other alien races have.

Black Krrsantan vs. Chewbacca: Who Is the Strongest Wookie?
Of course, Wookiees aren’t the most technologically advanced people in Star Wars. They understand technology’s ins and outs, as Chewbacca is talented in that field. But the Wookiees aren’t the best in creating technological devices, as they prefer to use wood for most of their tech. As such, the only way a Wookiee can get off the planet is to contact someone off-world.

That means most of the Wookiees stayed home on Kashyyyk even after the Rebels liberated the planet. They would rather stay in Kashyyyk to be one with the forest. This explains why we haven’t seen a lot of Wookiees in Star Wars, as the only ones we’ve seen outside of Kashyyyk were the ones that had good reasons for not being home. Chewy, of course, works with his best friend as a smuggler. Meanwhile, Krrsantan was exiled from his planet
