Is Cal Kestis Star Wars Canon? (& What Is His Canon Lightsaber Color)

Out of all of the different Star Wars characters we’ve seen in video games, one of the most intriguing is Cal Kestis, who is the playable character of the hit video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the upcoming sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. While Cal may be as popular as he is, there are some who are wondering whether or not he is actually part of the official canon of the Star Wars continuity, considering that Lucasfilm is strict in relation to who and what is canon. So, is Cal Kestis Star Wars canon?

Cal Kestis is Star Wars canon because Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is canon and part of the official Star Wars timeline and continuity. Fall Order takes place in 14 BBY. Survivor takes place on 9 BBY. That means that Cal Kestis is alive during the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

There are a lot of interesting things that happened between the events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Of course, the storyline of Cal Kestis during the time of the Inquisition is one of the most interesting parts of the entire continuity. That said, let’s look at how Cal Kestis fits into the entire Star Wars canon.

Who is Cal Kestis?
The entire Star Wars galaxy is huge and full of different characters, and we know that there are a lot of different personalities that have their own storylines in the grander scheme of things in the Star Wars continuity. We’ve seen a lot of these characters in the various movies, TV series, and comics that form part of the Star Wars canon timeline. But the thing is that there aren’t a lot of characters that are video game-only. One such character is Cal Kestis.

Cal Kestis is the playable character of the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order video game and the upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Survivor sequel. In Fallen Order, Cal was shown as a laborer on the planet named Bracca. He was a scrapper there but ended up having to flee from the planet when the Inquisitors came when he had to use the Force to save one of his companions at work.

That’s because Cal was actually a Jedi Padawan that survived the events of Order 66 five years before the events of the game. He lost his master in their attempt to escape the events of Order 66, but Cal held on to the lightsaber that his master once owned.

The entire Fallen Order video game focused on Cal’s storyline and how he had to work with the crew of the Stinger Mantis, which saved him from the events on Bracca. A good part of Cal’s storyline involves searching for a missing Jedi Holocron that is said to have information on the location of all of the Force-sensitive children in the galaxy.

As such, a wild chase between his crew and the Inquisitors commenced because he and his crewmates needed the Holocron to rebuild the Jedi Order, while the Empire wanted it to potentially kill all of the Force-sensitive children or use them for their own goals.

Is Cal Kestis Canon?
One of the things that haven’t been a secret in relation to Star Wars ever since Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney is the fact that the continuity has been quite strict in relation to what’s canon and what’s not. That’s because almost all of the non-movie Star Wars media released before the Disney acquisition in October of 2012 were basically regarded as Legends and were no longer part of the official canon. Meanwhile, only those that were released with the participation of Disney were regarded as canon.

Of course, Cal Kestis is one of the characters that people were unsure of when talking about his status in the Star Wars continuity. That’s because not all video games released during the Disney era of Star Wars are actually canon. But the good thing about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is that it is a game that focuses more on narration and storytelling.

As such, Fallen Order was developed with the idea that it should stay consistent with the entire Star Wars continuity to make sure that fans don’t get confused about whether or not it is canon. At first, it wasn’t supposed to be a canon game. However, when Respawn, the studio that was asked to develop the game, was told to make it canon, that was when the storyline had to stay consistent with the canon that had already been established by the movies, TV series, and books.

Aaron Contreras was brought in as the narrative lead for Fallen Order during the development stage of the game. His job was to work together with the developers as the bridge that connected them with the Lucasfilm Story Group, which is a council composed of different people that determine the boundaries of certain Star Wars stories based on the canon that has already been established. As such, Contreras was the liaison between the two groups, as he told the developers their limits in relation to the storyline that they were developing for Fallen Order.

As such, everything that was included in the game needed to be consistent with what was already canon. And that basically means that the entire Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order game is part of the Star Wars canon.

Considering that Fallen Order is canon to the Star Wars continuity, that means that Cal Kestis is also canon to the storyline as well. Fallen Order took place during the time of the Inquisition, as he started his quest as a Jedi on 14 BBY. Meanwhile, Survivor, the sequel to the game, takes place on 9 BBY, which is the exact same year that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series took place.

Of course, there were a lot of revelations in the Kenobi series, and that included the survival of Quinlan Vos, who was one of his Jedi friends during the time of the Clone Wars. In that regard, there is a good chance that both Obi-Wan and Quinlan will appear in the Survivor video game, depending on the flow of the storyline.

What is Cal Kestis’s Canon Lightsaber Color?

The thing about Cal Kestis is that he has no exact canon lightsaber color because of the fact that his lightsaber is fully customizable in terms of not only its color but also its overall appearance. That’s why, unlike all of the other Jedi in Star Wars, he doesn’t have a lightsaber color that he favors.

However, Cal Kestis does have the standard blue lightsaber in the promotional materials of Jedi: Fallen Order. Of course, this is the usual lightsaber color that we often see wielded by most Jedi. But his lightsaber color is fully customizable in the sense that you can choose which saber crystal color to use.

But what makes Cal’s lightsaber unique is the fact that he is the only Jedi to ever wield an indigo lightsaber color in canon. That’s because indigo is one of the lightsaber colors that you can use on Cal’s weapon during the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
