Now that the Season 2 finale has put things back on track for Will Trent, it’s time to look forward to what’s to come in Season 3, which returns later this year.
While there are still relatively few details about how the story will continue after such a heartbreaking series of events in the shortened second season, we do have a few details to share.
When will Will Trent Season 3 premiere?
ABC has announced that Will Trent Season 3 will be part of their midseason releases in the fall of 2024. This means that while there’s no exact release date yet, fans can expect it to return later this year. Additionally, co-creators Liz Heldens and Daniel T. Thomsen told TV Insider that they’ll be back in their writers’ room this June.
How many episodes will Will Trent Season 3 have?
The show’s bosses also explained that the series will have nearly double the number of episodes as the strike-affected Season 2. Thomson explained, “I think the difference on the surface is that we have 18 episodes this season instead of 10 in Season 2. And what I’m hoping is that will allow us to play on a bigger board next season. The whole idea for Season 2 is to create tightly-constructed arcs that intertwine with what our main characters are doing. And I think it’s going to be fun to do some of the smaller arcs and take your time with things.”
What Will Trent Season 3 Be About?
If you haven’t seen Will Trent’s Season 2 finale, “Have You See the Vision?”, skip ahead because there are spoilers!
In the Season 2 finale, Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) discovers that Angie (Erika Christensen) didn’t kill Lenny, but instead covered up for Crystal, who later became a serial killer. Her lies led to more deaths (even though they were all horrific child abusers) and she broke the law. As a result, he has Angie arrested at the end of the episode, undoing all the progress the two had made as a couple throughout the season and as best friends throughout their lives. So what happens next?
“It’s great to be able to throw all the pieces up in the air and find out where they land,” Heldens says of the devastating turn of events. “We’re excited to find out what that looks like for her, as well as him being forced to contemplate a chapter of his life without Angie,” Thomsen adds.
Who’s Cast in Will Trent Season 3?
Deadline reports that Gina Rodriguez has joined the cast as a series regular. Her character, Marion Alba, is described as “a charismatic, confident Assistant District Attorney new to Atlanta” who meets Will and gets “surprised” when they have to team up to investigate gang-related crimes. (Could this be a new romance for Will after the Angie shock?!) What else can we expect from Will Trent Season 3?
While Season 3 is clearly still in the early stages of development, the cast has weighed in on some things they might like to see in the upcoming season.
For example, Sonja Sohn told TV Insider, “I want to see Amanda’s personal relationships explored more. I want to know who Amanda’s ex-boyfriend is — Evelyn’s brother — and who she might be interested in in the future. I feel like everyone is in a romantic relationship right now except Amanda, so I want to see some romantic interest develop for her and see how that impacts her, her hard shell. I think when anyone gets attention paid to them or their emotions if they have love in their life, they’re different. And I want to see what happens to Amanda in that situation.”
Meanwhile, Jake McLaughlin added that he hopes to see more action scenes for his character Michael Ormewood, explaining, “I love action scenes. That’s what I love. I had a great fight scene that just aired last week that I had a lot of fun doing in the choreography. It was fun. So those scenes are always— that’s more of a ticket for me. I love doing action scenes, just ramping up the intensity of it all. I love keeping it moving.”
